i understand for a humanities major, the norm is taking 4 courses a semester. however, would it be possible to take a light 5th course, just for kicks, as a pass/fail option? is pail/fail even an option? thanks for the help!

Your first semester, all your classes are pass/fail. It's definitely possible to take 5 classes - I know a lot of people who did, myself included. After the first semester, you can take one non-major class pass/fail each semester.

I'm confused? Have I been doing something wrong? I'm humanities. I took 5 courses my first semester at Hopkins and 6 my second semester (although the 6th was a 1 credit pass/fail). All the rest were 3 credits, meaning I had a total of 15 credits first semester and 16 second.

Next semester (Fall 06) I'm going to be taking 5 courses, two of which are 4 credit ones so that will be a total of 17 credits. None are pass/fail. And I have quite a bit of free time here for other activities, work on the newspaper, etc.

Most JHU students will be taking more than just 4 classes per semester. Unless they are really advanced humanities courses or require a lot of work. Kids here are usually are more motivated to take more than the bare minimum. (4 classes X 3 Credits = 12 credits, or the bare minimum to remain enrolled in the university, most take ~13-16 credits/semester)

The norm for humanities is defiantely taking 5 classes per semester. Engineering is slightly different because a lot more of the courses are 4 credits each. I have found the whole credit system to be quite ironic. This has been my hardest semester by far and I am only taking 13 credits, whereas last semester was quite possibly my easiest and I took 19 credits. It really depends on the difficulty of the classes as to how many credits/classes you should take each semester.

spe07 is right. You can be taking 19 credits and be barely working or you can take 12 credits made up of something like Honors Analysis, Transport Phenomena, and some other advanced engineering courses and cry yourself to sleep everynight. (Not that anyone would ever take these courses together lol)
