Passing FE Exam prior to senior year

How helpful would it be for me to pass the FE Exam prior to doing interviews my senior year? (The state of Michigan has no requirements to take the FE Exam.) I don't think it will be too tough to get it done, and it seems like it would just be something else that would stick out on my resume and show that I am serious about being an engineer and becoming licensed in the future.

I am a EE major at Michigan, and I am hoping to obtain a position in the energy industry upon graduation (hopefully oil, but will have to try utilities as well.) I will have a good bit of experience by fall of my senior year, 12 months of co-op experience in the oil industry and 4 months of interning with a utility. I'd imagine that companies in both of these industries want their engineers to get licensed.

Since the exam is in April and I have a full course load ahead, does it seem like it would be worth it to put in time for the exam so I'll have passed for fall interviews? Or would it be better to just prepare over the summer to take it in October?

It’s not required for CE majors, however, with unemployment on the rise, the companies can be choosy about who they pick. The FE Exam is another thing to seperate you from the rest. Do it and good luck. The price is $150.

I can’t see passing the PE hurt, but I also can’t really see it helping in most cases. It is something to set you apart, but as mentioned, it’s $150 and time required.

It’s time required now that might have otherwise been spent on your courses, but if you plan on going for the PE anyway, you’ll have to pay the fee to take the FE anyway at some point.
