Has anyone decided to not play college athletics because they felt they could not handle the pressure of academics with incessant athletic practice? My coach wants me to play Div 1-AA football, but I honestly don't think I can do it. I want to be a doctor someday so the grades are very important. I'm not an idiot, I just can't do bad academically in college or it will be a miserable four years. Anyone else in this situation or was in this situation? What did you do and why?

Depending on the university, it can be very difficult to be a pre-med student and a Div 1 athlete. Although it will vary from coach to coach, practices are generally mandatory (3:00 to 6:00pm everyday, for example), and classes must be scheduled around those times. This makes it difficult when the courses/labs you need conflict with those times.

Sorry, I didn't mean for my last post to sound so discouraging. I would not rule out the possibility that you can do both. You need to be upfront and honest with coaches about your goals, and if they want you badly enough, they may be willing to work around your schedule.

My D. is in the same boat as you.
She wants to go pre med and there fore decided to play D3 sports.

Have you met and talked with d1 coaches to find out the level of commitment?
That may help you decide.

Also, think about your future, what will carry you more in the long run,
Playing D1a football or a medical degree?

If you don't want to play intercollegiately and the scholarship is not an issue DON'T DO IT. Even at DIII, the commitment is too great.

My son had to make a similar decision. He is currently a sophomore and a biology major/pre-med at a top LAC, and enjoys playing Division III football. He said the academic rigor is tougher during the football season, but manageable.

OP...I see your coach wants you to play D1-AA football..what do the D-!AA coaches say?

Have you been shown stong interest by them..phone calls..in home visits..hand written letters etc?

Lets address that first.
