Passion versus Income

Does it affect people's choices? Should somebody factor it in their major choice at college? Does getting into a top school allow for some leeway? I'd love to hear more about it. What do you think?

I don't really understand where your 3rd question factors into this discussion...

But on the basic question: passion!!!

To elaborate on my third question, if somebody has a passion for..lets say classics..and they wish to pursue a career in that discipline. Now, it is a fact that majors in classics have one of the highest unemployment rates, and it is hard to find a lucrative job in that sector..so if you have a passion for classics, could majoring in a top university allow for more leeway to pursue your passion, in that it is easier to find a job on a more obscure major after having graduated from a top university?

I'd say that going to a top or, for that matter, large, school would probably provide you with more connections. And that people might want to hire you originally because you went to that top school. So, yeah, finding a first job might be simpler. But after the first or second job, your work ethic and dedication is going to matter more than whether or not you graduated from HYP.

i agree with you completely cliche, but is it passion or income for you guys? to me, it's passion..i just wanted to see how others view the matter at hand..

In reply to the 3rd question: Well, I definitely think so. Name+prestige tend to help a lot when it comes to finding a job, so assuming that 2 applicants have similar GPA's and resumes, I'd bet my money on the HYPS/whatever grad to get the job.

In a nutshell: yes, it will help.

This is just my view, though.

Over on the Parents forum, there is a VERY sobering thread by taxguy. It's entitled "SHould you incur substantial debt for that "dream" school or arts major". Passion is fine but some parents are going to be destitute retirees because of choices students are making.
