i understand that many colleges want to see passion and focus of an applicant in one area through his/her extracurricular activities, but what if you have joined a couple of clubs just for fun and put that on your apps? Would they make your application seem less focused towards one area?

Of course not. How will you find out what you enjoy if you don't sample? They don't expect you to be laser-beam focused from eighth grade onwards.

And I'll clear up a misconception. They want people who have passion and drive. It will show up in ECs or .... even scholarship, or work, or family life. There are many areas where our internal drive and self-motivation can become evident.

It's not only on the shoulders of the Newspaper editor, CC captian, or junior researcher at the Med lab. It can scream out from the guy who has to be home at 3PM everyday to receive his younger sibs off the school bus b/c mom is working. Or the gal who needs to work 15 hrs at the family store to make ends meet.

Drive and determination have many places to be recognized...
