I had to stop going to school for 6 months due to family bills that came up. I have an outstanding balance of $3k at the school I was attending. I also have student loans that will be due as of 12-14 if I don't re-enroll full time (that is the 6 month deadline).

I was considering going to a new local school - I know I won't get my transcripts until I am done paying the 3K bill (already under payment arrangment but school will not let me enroll in new classes until it is paid off).

Does anyone know if I can enroll in a new school, apply for additional sub and unsub loans and qualify to avoid the repayment rule as i have reapplied at a new school full time? This way by next spring I wil have the 3k paid off and be able to get the transcripts sent over. In the meantime I know which classes I need to take.

Thanks for the help!

Your new school will not likely allow you to enroll without a transcript from your old school. To get that transcript, the loans to that first school usually need to be paid in full. Ask the new school if they have your transcript. Ask the old school if it will be released to the new school without full repayment of the money you owe.

Really…only the schools can answer your question.

I will offer an unsolicited opinion here. You are already having debt issues. Please consider going to a college that is affordable.

The school was affordable… I wanted to change before I moved to a new state, my husband was relocated for work. Unfortunately I ended up being in and out of the hospital for about 3 months in the second week of a new mod (online courses every 8 weeks). The school would not let me drop the classes and charged me full price for those. I appealed and it was denied even after showing the medical bills and the emergency room visits. This was the final straw that pushed me to want to transfer schools. Now that my health is back in check (turned out it was a minor thryoid issue and not cancer as they had feared… phew!) i wanted to re-enroll.

I thought i could enroll but just not have credits counted until i had the transcript. …thanks for the input.

If you do not need financial aid, you may be able to enroll as a non-degree student without the transcript from the first institution. However, that probably won’t put your loans into deferment.

You are correct, that first institution is a bad one! Pull the money together, pay that debt off, get your transcript, and move on.

Was it a for-profit school?

You can contact your loan servicer to ask for a temporary forbearance - that way, you won’t have to pay right away when the loans come due. However, another option would be to apply for an income driven repayment plan … if your income is not high, you will probably have a very low (or 0) repayment amount with the Pay as You Earn Plan. That makes sense to me. See https://studentaid.ed.gov/repay-loans/understand for information about PAYE. You would need to apply for PAYE right away, because it does take some time to process the request.
