Past is biting me in the ass

I'll try to keep this short. I'm one of those people who is really intelligent, but really lazy and very apathetic towards many things. Basically I was very ignorant of how college worked in high school because I didn't care. I graduated in '07 and went to SDSU in fall of '07 and spring of '08. I basically ditched all my classes and failed them both semesters and dropped out because I just didn't want to be there.

Now 3 years later, I want to get an education so I am actually trying. Started going to school this fall to SWC in San Diego. No surprise to me I am currently getting the highest test scores or the second highest in all my classes; first time I've had more than one A at a time, or 6 A's. I also did good enough to get placed in Calc 2 and Calc-Physics, plus some other gen eds that I have to take unfortunately to transfer eventually. Only thing I care about is math and science. I am also doing all those things that are expected of good students (only because I have to), such as community service, clubs, programs, etc. Getting straight A's and those extra things are the easy part, the hard part is another thing.

Since I have failed all those other classes 3 years ago, which is the biggest regret of my life right now, what would be the best way of fixing that? I know when I transfer, schools will look at that. Not only that, but I was talking to my councelor and those grades will affect my GPA! Makes me feel like crap.

I have come up with a plan which is hopefully the best way to fix it, but I need advice to see if there are any better options.

What I want to do is finish my general ed here at SWC. Then transfer back to SDSU(going to use a trasnfer guarantee program so I don't have to worry) and retake all the classes I took there and get those grades replaced with the new grades. They offer something called course forgiveness, so my plan is to ace all those classes and raise my GPA to a 4.0. Then after I'm done there I want to transfer to my now dream school MIT, or UC Berkely. So would this double transfer be my best bet to get into a top science/math university? Is a double transfer even possible?

Please enlighten me, this is killing me.

Your biggest problem with double-transferring (transfering from SDSU to MIT or Berk) is that you may hit a transfer unit max limit of 4year and CCC credits. I don’t know the exact number but it is around 86 - 90 depending on the school. Basically UCs like Berkeley do NOT want to transfer in “senior-status” students. So your plan would have to include being careful of that.

Also, it is tough to transfer UC to UC (ie: SDSU to BerK) is highly unlikely – you are better off trying to transfer straight into the UC that you MOST want to finish your undergrad degree. Because you might not get into something better later on.

Double Transfers can happen (you are almost more a triple transfer… UCSD-SWC-UCSD-?) but since you have listed extremely competitive unis of Berk and MIT it is impossible to gauge if you will get in. Just make sure that your Plan B is really solid because lots of students are having to go that route these days.

Good luck.

i think if you go to a UC school and keep your grades up in hard classes, you should be fine.

MIT might be a long shot but you still gotta’ try.

your story is almost similar to mine except i nearly bombed outta HS. Worked for 3 years, went to CC and transfered.

I wish you the best of luck.

I feel you guys. My plan is pretty similar to physika
s. I did my first semester at a small liberal arts college, DePauw. Did not put the slightest bit of effort and ended up with 3 Fs and a D. Got suspended and ended up in Linn Benton Community College in Oregon. I have completed 3 semesters here with GPA of 3.85+ and in 2 of my semesters I have taken over 23 credits each. I have also retaken the classes I failed in and got A
s. I am thinking of transferring to Oregon State University and do 2 semesters there.

I want to transfer as a junior to one of my dreams schools; USC, Notre Dame, Cornell and Northwestern. I don`t know how the admission offices treat applicants like us who have had rough starts. What do you guys think we should do to make them focus on our recent dramatic changes in academic performances instead of our past histories?

^ you in corvallis or albany??

osu isnt a good liberal arts school from what i hear…if i can keep my grades up im gonna transfer to U of O i think.
