Paul Romer

This is sort of relevant to CC in that my question could give applicants a feel for the academic climate at UChicago. I know several of the alumni who comment on this board could very well have crossed paths with Paul Romer in the 80’s and 90’s. Did any of you know him? Taught by him? What do you think of him getting the award? Why did he leave UChicago? Any good stories? Thanks.

Romer got his PhD at Chicago Econ and was a student of Robert Lucas. He was hired with tenure after a stint at Rochester (another school known to be ‘fresh-water’). Only stayed a couple of years at Chicago before moving on to Berkeley Econ. then Stanford Bus. Not sure why he didn’t hang around longer. Perhaps he was more a ‘salt-water’ kind of guy back in those days.

I like that it confirms the US model of government support for research, and the value that Research Universities create, benefiting the inventor, the believers, the country and the world.

His father is Roy Romer former three term Democratic governor of Colorado. Paul is die hard Republican though
