I'm international, on an exchange in Mass. for a year, and I want to get a cheap pay-as-you-go phone when I get there.
I don't want to bother with a contract since I'll only be there for 10 months, and I'll be skyping with home for free, so international calls are not an issue.

Which provider should I use for a pay-as-you-go phone in MA?

Where exactly in MA? And how much do you anticipate using your phone? Just as a heads up, American service providers charge you for incoming calls and texts as well as outgoing ones.

I personally like my $25 monthly prepaid plan from Virgin Mobile: I get 400 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited web, and I can cancel it whenever I like.

^Sorry for barging into this thread but that sounds like an amazing plan, although it is monthly pay. Thanks so much!
Barium, did you also get your cell phone from them??
Does virgin have a good coverage in cambridge, mass.?
Do you think it’s a good plan if I plan on using like probably 100 min per month…?

EDIT: actually, i might be using it for a lot less min per month… I’m so confused.

Virgin unfortunately raised their plans to $35 a month a couple of days ago. :(

But I love Virgin. haha. And if you don’t text/surf the web/use data/talk much, then their basic program is pretty good. You only have to top up at least $20 every three months. I think minutes are like $.20 each and texts are like $.10 each.
