paying for private school

Hey everyone. I recently graduated from high school. Currently I am planning on attending a private university in the fall, but I'm not sure if things are going to work out financially anymore. Long story short- I live with my dad, who is unemployed, and due to the economy, my savings have shrunk drastically. I have a small merit scholarship and the school offered a little in student loans for financial aid. My appeal for more financial aid was declined. I have a little saved from working during the school year and am searching for a summer job. I plan to work during college as well. I would like to go to law school someday but now am thinking of just getting a degree in business so I can begin work immediately after undergrad. It is a fantastic school, and I would love to attend all four years, but I realize that if I do, the amount of debt I'm going to leave with is going to be massive. I'd appreciate any advice!

Does anyone know of any good scholarships for people who have already graduated from high school or colleges that have scholarships for transfer students?

Do a search on the Transfer Students forum, here is one example:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/702115-big-merit-scholarships-transfers.html?highlight=merit+scholarships

I wouldn’t want to start at a school I knew I couldn’t afford and have to transfer with high loans. The financial burden will be with you for a long time and sounds like it will impact your options later. Under these circumstances, it’s often better to start small and graduate from your dream school.

Transfer scholarships are not usually as lucrative as freshman scholarships…and you’re only a freshman once! Is there another option to starting school in the fall at a college that will be unaffordable? Were you accepted/offered more aid at another school? Or, do you have a local college? If so, you might contact them and see if they still have space and can maintain their original offer. If not, you might wait and start in January or do a gap year working/saving or with Americorps which would help with tuition.
