Paying Summer Jobs for college MT's

edmondsg....happy for your son that he got a slot at StrawHats. Congrats to him on his show at NU too.

RossJi.....while NETC does happen first, the list of theaters isn't exactly the same as StrawHats. For instance, my D's former roomie, L., whom you know at CAP, only did NETC the summer after freshman year (didn't get into StrawHats back then but did this year....and as you know, has played a few leads at CAP) and she was cast from NETC as a lead in a musical at a summer stock theater that ironically, KatMT directs (I met her here after the fact and realized this coincidence, small world) and that theater does not attend StrawHats, or didn't back then anyway. Also, many people are cast from auditions at StrawHats, as was my own kid that year. So, while a few theaters overlap, many don't and in any case, people are cast from both sets of auditions. But many who attend either audition are not cast as the sheer numbers of those who audition is quite big. Your D still has StrawHats and so if she doesn't end up getting to go to NETC, that should be OK. The year my D did it, she got into StrawHats but not NETC (because she was 17 at the time and StrawHats waived the age for her given her circumstances of having gone through a year of college already, but NETC would not make an exception) but roomie had gotten into NETC but not StrawHats (reminds me of how BFA auditions can be!). Remember, they only have your resume to go by and so it is not entirely a talent based decision. Also, your D may want to see if she can do some other auditions in the city because some very good summer stock theaters do NOT attend StrawHats but hold auditions in the city.

RE: Tisch Mainstage Musical....am sorry to hear you could not get tickets but am not surprised unless you were very aware of the sale date. The entire ten show run sold out in a couple of days! They added one more show that sold out in two minutes. Many have not been able to get tickets. Is your D seeing it? I know my D said she will get to see your D's show at the final matinee on Sunday as that is the only time she is not involved in her own show and that the ITW kids can see her show the next weekend as ITW will be over. I am very sorry to not see your D's show either but I can't make any more trips to NYC beyond my own kid's shows. I already am going to NYC two times a week apart to see Only Children. She is also cast in A Class Act and so we'll be back for that in April and would like to see N'Harmonics at Joe's Pub but haven't yet figured out fitting all these in. You live so close to NYC that you can just bop in, but not us. I really would love to see your D in a show some time. As far as clips from Only Children landing on You Tube....I kinda doubt it...I have never seen Tisch shows on You Tube like all these other BFA programs seem to constantly put up. Anyway, if they put Only Children on YouTube, it would have to be "X rated." :D My D has loved working on this show and said it has been very challenging to not only originate a role but to work on a new musical that keeps developing and being rewritten in various ways along the way. She has learned so much. They are going into the recording studio after the show closes to record the show. Please wish your D "break a leg" from my family for her show and I will have to get the low down from my D. Your D is perfect for that role. My D played Little Red in ninth grade and so I have fond memories of it. Enjoy!

Edmondsg We stayed in the Hotel Cosmopoliton when my daughter auditioned at Pace this year. It was a 10 minute walk away from Pace- very nice rooms and area. Also right by a subway stop. We paid a little over $200 for two double beds- they might have a special or lower rates for a single.

Thanks, PA. Sounds like a good option.

Rossji -- I concur with Soozievt -- many theatres attend multiple audition conferences... some make offers as they go, but if a theatre had entirely cast their season before attending a conference they most likely would not attend.

The theatre where I work attends NETC and StrawHat (although SoozieVT is correct the year that her Ds friend worked for us we attended SETC and NETC, but not StrawHat). Some theatre companies attend all possible conferences.... MWTA, UPTA, SETC, NETC, StrawHat and have local auditions and sometimes seperate auditions in NYC. Basically, theatres will hold auditions until they have found the cast they need for the summer....

Last year we attended Strawhat after NETC .. and yes, we havd cast some performers from NETC and therefor were not looking to fill particular roels at StrawHat.... but I think there were only one or two roles where this was the case. Ultimately I would say that about 1/2 the company was cast from NETC and 1/2 at StrawHat... some performers we saw at both auditions, some at one or the other.

BREAK a Leg!

:)

Thanks, KatMT! I realize that the theaters who attend both NETC and Strawhat don't necessarily offer jobs at NETC, but it has been done. All I'm saying is, there is a greater possibility of getting a job offer if one attends BOTH NETC and
Strawhat. Oh, well.

SoozieVT - I don't think my daughter was able to get a ticket, because she was supposed to get 2 of them for both of us!! We're both really bummed.
What is A Class Act? I haven't heard of that.
When does your d's show open? I know it was around late Feb-early March, but I can't remember for sure. I'm glad she's loving it! What a great opportunity for her. I told you all along she'd be getting these great roles!!!

RossJi...Only Children opens this Thursday night for 11 performances and closes on March 1. Invited dress for faculty, etc. is Wednesday. It overlaps your D's show this weekend but I think kids from your D's cast will see my D's show the second weekend of their run.

A Class Act is a musical that had been on Broadway. It is the story of Ed Kleban's (lyrcist of A Chorus Line) life and the songs he wrote that weren't performed. It is being done at Playwrights. It is an 8 member cast but three key roles were pre-cast prior to auditions and so they only auditioned for 5 roles, two of them female. AW is one of the precast female roles. My daughter is playing Felicia (not pre-cast), the producer, which was the role originated by Julia Murney but when it went to Broadway it was played by Sara Ramirez. It is in late April. I can't wait to see my D's show (Only Children) and to hear about your D's show (Into the Woods) which my daughter will see this coming Sunday. I think a lot of people are bummed to not get tix for Only Children. The ten shows went in two days and then they added an 11th performance. I heard it was the fastest selling mainstage show they've had. I wish these shows could accommodate more people.

Break a leg to your D with ITW and with StrawHats and to all those who have chosen to do StrawHats or NETC this year.

This has been an interesting thread. I didn't realize NETC and Strawhats overlapped so much. Sounds like there is value to doing both.

Thanks, SoozieVT. I would love to get the cast recording of your d's show since I'm unable to see it because THE THEATERS THEY SHOW THEM IN ARE WAAAAAAAAAYY TOO SMALL................... OK, got that off my chest!!

Only Children is in the Abe Burrows Theater which is at Tisch. I haven't been in it yet but my D says it is clearly bigger than where the CAP21 shows are at the studio (thankfully)! I don't know if my D will get a copy of the cast recording (hope so). I know this recording likely will be used to get the show out to producers. I know various NY theater companies are attending this musical at Tisch. I'll let you know.

Well, if your d, the LEAD, doesn't get a copy of the cast recording, someone should sue!! I thought the theater was small, but maybe not. Glad it's bigger than CAP! THat would be cool if someone produced the musical on or off-Broadway! How awesome!

rossji, when a show like this goes into the studio to record, it isn't the same as when a running production makes a cast recording. As Susan said, this is being done to shop the show around for potential investors and producers. It's not a cast recording that is going to be available for purchase. :) They may or may not give a copy to the current cast but even that doesn't always happen.

Congrats on your D's run in ITW. I've heard from a few different people how good she was! Finding adequate theatre space in NYC has always been an issue which, intuitively, sounds crazy but it's true. The demand is such that it isn't easy, even for Broadway theatres. Shows are 'lined up' waiting for available Broadway theatres. The demand will not exist elsewhere (on other college campuses) obviously, in the same way. The other issue is that new theatre space isn't being built. That, combined with the huge number of productions done at NYU, means that some shows are performed in theatres which could be filled many times over. Another thing to keep in mind is that the demand for tickets is going to be much larger than at any other college. You have not only the college itself, with tens of thousands of students, but also a city that is chock full of theatre fans. Tisch and Steinhardt shows are advertised on theatre sites both online and in the press so attract many non-NYU people, and also the many Tisch alumni who are living in the city. There really isn't a solution so it's imperative that you keep on top of what productions are planned and when tickets go on sale, that you call immediately. If you do this, you won't ever have a problem getting tickets!

Alwaysamom, I know they're making a recording in hopes of "selling" the show to producers, but I can always HOPE that my BFF SoozieVT can get me a copy.... hee hee....
As far as theater space goes, it just SEEMS (and I'm probably wrong!) that many times the big theaters are available (i.e. Skirball) when other shows are performing in the tiny theaters. I'm sure it must be a timing thing; the show schedules overlap some of the Skirball schedules, or whatever. Also, my d says that Tisch has to "pay" to use Skirball? Can't figure that one out; it's an NYU building!
I know the demand for tix is high, esp. in the city. But I have to disagree with you about one thing: You will NOT always get tickets for soon to be sold-out shows, even if you're early. I mentioned in a post last year that I went online the SECOND (Literally!) that Parade tickets went for sale, and couldn't even get tickets for my PARENTS to see their granddaughter. That ain't right, I'm sorry.....
Thanks for the compliment, by the way!

I think cast members should have a narrow window of opportunity to order tix for family members before they go on sale to the general public, particularly if the shows are in venues with limited audience size. I don't think they have the right to buy out the show, but grandma should be able to see it once!!! :)

Thanks, MusThCC! I agree. To be fair, they DID hold 3 tickets for each cast member, so my husband, younger daughter, and I were able to attend. But poor Grandma.... outta luck...

Our D got her NETC audition letter in the mail yesterday. She has an appointment on the Saturday for the MT room. She is a freshman, so this is the first time we have been through this process. She did not apply to Strawhats, since it looked like there was sufficient overlap of theaters who attend both NETC and Strawhats, and since she has a Saturday class as well as several weekend rehearsals for various productions she will be in this spring, she wanted to limit the time away from school. She also auditioned for PCLO since it was over Elon's "Fake break" betweeen winterterm and spring semester. She was fortunate enough to make it through the initial dance audition, and received a callback for the next day where she danced some more, then made it through all the cuts, to sing and read. We are trying not to get our hopes up too much, but obviously she was thrilled to make it that far. Several other Elon kids also made it to callbacks--yay!

NYDanceMom,
That is great about your D and her callbacks at PCLO and that she'll have the opportunity to audition at NETC. Good luck to her!

RossJi...I feel funny as this is so off topic of this thread but to respond to your post about the CD recording of Only Children...it won't be a CD that is for sale. I am sure it will be used in some capacity to shop the show to producers. My D is happy to get to record it as an original cast. I'm not saying she won't get a copy but simply I don't know the answer. This is her third time in a recording studio this year. She was the musical director for Liz Swado's professional production of Atonement and they recorded it in a recording studio and she DID receive a copy but I haven't heard it yet (though saw the show). She also recorded NYU N'Harmonics first published CD that will be for sale. I think we may have a copy but I am losing track.

I'm on the West Coast and flying East and again, kudos to the third year Cappies in ITW. AlwaysAMom, are you going to be in the city to see Only Children by chance?

How were the NETC/Strawhat auditions, everyone? Any feedback? Any gossip? C'mon, you can tell me! Lol.

NETC was weird for the acting portion. The kids that did get call backs were offered experiences in which they had to pay for summer work/training? She mentioned circle in the square and Hanger. At least the few kids that my d knew about. I think one boy was offered something that actually payed.
D thought that no call back meant that she shouldn't go to the dance call, so she didn't. I think she should have anyway, but she emailed them and was not able to get any information after it was said and done. She just left, not really clear about what to do. I might add that there was really little or no information sent to her prior.
The MT kids did a lot better it looked like to her, so for future reference, it is best to try to get an appointment for mt, or maybe just crash the dance portion in case they are still writing down names. Luckily it wasn't a huge expense for her & we enjoyed the quick visit!

BTW, SETC was great! Unlike NETC they had numerous classes & workshops presented by professionals, as well as performances & even a few callbacks! They sent plenty of information prior in the form of magazines and newspapers with plenty of details about what to expect. She ended up with two job offers. Well worth the time & effort in the long run for her. D said that many Elon kids will be working this summer in places far and wide from SETC.

My son, a freshman at NYU, thought NETC was good, although he auditioned on Monday and some theaters did not attend that session. He got 6 MT callbacks and he thought they went well based on the comments, interactions, the length of time they spent with him, etc. But so far, he hasn't heard back from any of them. Does anyone have any thoughts on how this works? Do some of them wait until after Strawhat before making firm offers?
