Summer Stock Theatre Auditions

Ok... so this is first year my son will be auditioning for Summer Theater... And this process seems a little daunting. He has completed applications for Strawhat and NETC and of course he is waiting to hear back to see if they will even allow him to audition. We missed on SETC, because he didn't audition in time regionally and the the Midwest auditions closed within a few hours of opening (that's crazy)... He will audition for MUNY this year (this will be his first time, but at least he has an opportunity to audition), but I heard at least 5000 people audition for this summer theater (not sure if thats correct). Also he is going to school in Pittsburgh, so he can easily audition for Pittsburgh CLO, but I heard they only open up approximately 15 positions.

Can anyone give me input on these venues/events?

Feel a little lost in this new process. How difficult is it for freshmen students to get work (especially since he does not have any professional experience).

Any feedback would be appreciated... thanks :)

In the same boat so I don’t have any advice but wanted to let you know my S received an email today saying he has a Strawhats auditions so they are starting to schedule.

In speaking to others MUNY and CLO are really hard to book. I can’t imagine any of them are easy but those two come to mind as really up there.

There are a few threads on this, I’ll search for them.

My daughter got a summer stock job via Strawhat last summer after auditioning as a freshman, and she had no professional experience, so it is possible, and I would think MORE possible for boys!

I can tell you right now approx (can’t remember exact number) 168 guys applied and 500 women so far for a Strawhats audition. I couldn’t believe the difference, still a month to register so I’m sure the male number will pick up.

thanks everyone for you input… @MTMajorCook when did your S send in his application to strawhat and how long after did you hear back from them… we just sent his in a week ago and I am feeling this may be late, I heard that this needs to be completed early, otherwise the audition slots are filled??? It looks like Males have a little advantage.

I’m just trying to figure out logistics of getting son to and from auditions when he is in Ohio, and we are in northern New England. He will focus on the New England area, and if it doesn’t pan out, will be bagging groceries for the summer, as I would be just as happy for him to have a job and make some money. :)

Entertainersmom - that is exactly why Strawhats (NYC) and NETC (just outside Boston) are worth the headache. Think of it as the Unifieds of summer stock. You audition for many theaters in one day, including callbacks. He should look into it,

Shenandoah has a relationship with the Signature Theatre in Arlington VA. From what I can recall if the director of that theatre does a show at Shenandoah, usually during the summer, Shenandoah students get preference casting. (I totally forgot about that relationship!)

@Inspired59‌ he sent in his app on 10/22 (roughly, pretty sure it was the week it opened) First he received confirmation his app was received. Then yesterday he received confirmation he was scheduled, he doesn’t know when yet though that is to come in the letter and I haven’t figured out how to bust into that online yet :))

@entertainersmom‌ there are NE theatres listed on the Strawhats list already - Encore At The Point in ME and one from RI Theatre by the Sea. I’m sure they will add more the list is still small yet.

I’ve studied the NETC info, but he would need to fly out in March, and hope his audition wouldn’t conflict with school, and it is a week or two after his Spring break,so $$$ is a consideration. There are auditions for NH area venues the Saturday before he returns from break, so that will work.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and input, I feel certain this helps a lot of us as we embark on this new journey. Has anyone auditioned in the past for MUNY, if so can you share your thoughts and experience. I know this is an open audition and they have a large number of auditonees… but any other details would be appreciated.

First, I think that MUNY number might inflated… I don’t know how many send in video auditions and are seen in NYC through agent submissions but they have two weekends of auditions in St. Louis. One for singers, one for dancers and there are cuts made during the day. You get passed to the next session if not cut. You can make it all the way to the end and even be measured for costumes and still not be hired. This happened my son’s sophomore year. It’s a great place to work! What other details are you looking for?

Thanks @lojosmo … Sorry your son didn’t make it last year, will he try again this year?

If you attend on the “Singers Open call”, do the auditionees only sing, or should a monologue be prepared. If you pass to the next session, what is expected… is there a dance call, another singing audition, etc…? How soon after do you hear is they want you for a show and/or rejected? As in a lot cases, are there less males auditioning?

Again thanks for your thoughts…

I think so, too. I know many NY actors who have auditioned via agent submissions for MUNY through the years and several have worked there in the spots for pros, a couple of them with some CC kids one season. It’s a good opportunity for the kids who are cast to work with experienced pros and to establish contacts with them that may come in handy in the future.

They’ve got an interesting variety of shows scheduled for 2015.

Thanks @alwaysamom … if the numbers are a little inflated that would be to sons advantage (or at least I hope), he is also a Barritone and when looking at this years shows, that may also be to his advantage for him (or at least I hope) for the ensemble work. He is excited for the possible opportunity of working as a professional this year :)

He was cast freshman year, not cast sophomore and cast junior year. Last year he he went to the singers call… singing first, you may sing again and then dance. He was called back the next day for more singing, dancing and sides with cuts after each. Freshman year he went to the dancers call and it was the reverse order with call backs the next day.

Today , my Son received his confirmation for his “registration” to Strawhat…so now we wait to see if they grant him an Audition… keeping fingers crossed

I am very new at this as my daughter is a freshman. She won’t be applying this season for summer work, but how is one granted an audition? Is it luck of the draw?

^^For Strawhats…to answer your question, bisouu, there is an application and a submission of one’s resume.
