Just think of all the time & $$$ we save the university by them not having to hound us for our money or send our accounts to collections, etc.

I just figure I ought to see what works best for our family. Paying monthly is SLIGHTLY less painful than trying to come up with a huge lump sum once or twice/year. Getting 2% or some other LITTLE return immediately from paying also eases the pain a bit. Of course, we’re glad our kids are getting a great education, but sure wish it weren’t quite so expensive.

If there is no fee for using the credit card, go for it! I used to do it wit te kids HS tuitions, til the school started to asssess a fee for using the cr. card. That ended that.
Both my s’s colleges charged to put anything on a credit card, so never did that.

Do it - if there is no fee with the college…and the credit card allows it. We have both a Discover and a Costco AmEx that would ahve garnered cash back… However our student’s U and the previous high school both charge a fee for using cards for tuition etc.

The fee for breaking up tuition into smaller payments can sometimes be too high as well…and so we pay in 2 big chunks…having put it away until payment time.

Yes, definitely explore the options so you are confident that whatever you are planning to do in terms of payment will work best for your & your family. We have done things various ways, depending on how much $$ was involved, how much $$ we had available as a lump sum, and how much would be charged if we broke the payment up into monthly payments. YMMV

University of Redlands did not charge a fee when son attended. We used Discover for four years. I always paid the bill at the local Sears a week before payment was due, didn’t want to get stuck with a late payment penalty. Sears insisted that each check be less than $10,000 when making payment. Now I would just pay online. It was nice to get the bonus money, I don’t think there was a limit on the bonus money then. I use AMEX for just about everything else.

kiddie, you are not overlooking anything. In fact, you would be crazy NOT to pay by credit card. My son is finishing up at Northeastern, and I have paid every bill with a high credit limit credit card that earns “miles”, and I looked at it as a free plane ticket with every tuition payment. As long as they don’t charge me to charge, then I will charge!

Personally, could never think of any good reasons NOT to pay via a credit card that gave us benefits for our charges–for tuition, all U expenses, and whatever else we needed to pay for that accepted our CC. It has been a good choice for us, as long as you make sure not to have a credit balance & pay in full every month, you will not have any interest, penalties or finance charges. Over the years, these charges have given us significant “goodies,” including plane trips & lots of additional cash. Every bit helps us.
