pc vs mac

does washu support one type of computer over the other? and is there a good way to buy it through the school (where my brother goes he buys the computer through the schoool and they cover repairs) or should i just get it on my own

Either. Make sure to look up student discount plans (which you get for having a .edu email address i.e. Dell offers 10% off total price with a .edu address).

washu is very mac oriented, but I know many with pcs. as far as buying it through the school I do not know many people who did that.

I’m not aware of any program where you can buy it through the school and get repairs.

As far as needed repairs go, there is an apple store in the galleria (which is a 5-10 minute drive away, or you can take the metro for free), so that’s a plus for macs.

But as others have said, the pc/mac debate doesn’t matter. WashU will support either (except in the art school junior/senior studios, where you need certain software and thus need a mac).

My tour guide said that of the computers WashU supplies (in the computer labs and stuff), half are macs and half are pcs.

In the engineering school, PCs tend to dominate. It seems more evenly split for ArtSci/Business students. Macs are more perceptually salient, which is why is seems that so many more students use them.

There are always both macs and PCs available in computer labs if you ever need to use the other; STS (Student Technology Services, [List of Services](<a href=“STS Home | Student Technology Services | Washington University in St. Louis”>STS Home | Student Technology Services | Washington University in St. Louis)) will help you with either, and if you’re an engineer, EIT (Engineering Information Technology, [EIT - Engineering IT home page](http://eit.engineering.wustl.edu/)) will do the same.

Here it says business students should get a pc rather than a mac.

I’ve heard about that with the B School. If I remember correctly, it’s due to mac excel/powerpoint having differences (or perhaps had, I believe mac office 2011 removed most differences). In any case, you can do fine with either. There are probably more computer labs than necessary (ie. we are overflowing with them).

If you are indifferent between the two, get a PC to be on the safe side. There won’t be too many instances where it will be a hassle if you have a Mac but, for me at least, situations such as learning Excel on a Mac is not what I want to deal with.
