<p>Why would friends/family be disapproving? Peace Corps etc. are some of the best things you can do with yourself after college. GO FOR IT. Go somewhere far-flung, it’ll change you for the better no matter what! Really, do it.</p>
<p>I’m a non-trad student (hence my SN) and so I’m returning to college in my 30s after working. But before all that, I saved my money and traveled thru Europe and North Africa for a year. I’ve traveled all over since, as much as I can afford. To be honest, one of the main reasons I wanted to complete my BA was so I could join the Peace Corps - it’s not just for you younguns 
and they rejected me outright without a college degree.</p>
<p>Give yourself plenty of time, though; I heard that Peace Corps takes 2 years to get back to you. And Americorps is getting like that, and getting 1000+ applicants for every position.</p>
