S is in a small town of Northeast. There is not much store nearby and he doesn't like go shopping at all. I got a peacoat at H&M website at $150. He was on a trip to NYC yesterday and was originally going to H&M store to buy one, but bad weather stopped him.
He doesn't care what to wear, he doesn't like wear layers. It's my idea to buy a peacoat, because Son is 6 feet and peacoat is formal which can be wear when he go for interview. (He'll have one next week at NYC). But peacoat is dusty and dry cleaning only.
What your college son are wearing? Checking talk here didn't see any one mention H&M. Does college guy wear peacoat? Would u buy peacoat, columbia/Northface 3in1 or a lightweight down coat?

college guys wear/ prefer Northface. Cant make a mistake buying that brand for him. Make sure the top shell is lined in polarfleece,[ regardless if you get the 3 in 1 or another model] and get him some light weight superfine wool liners- top and bottoms, wool socks and waterproof boots.

I agree that the Northface is a better choice if he only has one jacket. Buy it in black and it will look a little dressier and go with everything. The peacoat sounds nice, but it probably is not as warm and comfortable - it’s going to get VERY cold in the coming weeks.

S graduated from college and bought a peacoat form an Army Navy store. It actually looks very good. He hasn’t had the opportunity to wear it anywhere yet! He’s living in a moderate climate now.
D (college junior) says peacoats for college guys are happenin’!
PS S never bought clothes for himself until this year. H&M is his favorite.

I’m going to also recommend the NF in black. You want something he will wear. He may not care today, but if he does a month from now this what more young men his age are wearing.

I bought S a peacoat for Christmas, thinking like you, a good coat for school and a bit more stylish. He’s never worn it; he prefers a parka and fleece. He left it home this year…maybe someday.

My S got a North Face 3 in 1 model. Then I saw a good deal on a heavy wool pea coat and bought that for him in case he needed something a little more formal (and because I’d read on some thread on CC that a lot of college guys wore them). He actually ended up wearing the pea coat more. He’s in Chicago–so it is cold.

I vote peacoat. . . I got one in college - it worked great.

First thing S2 asked for once he got to campus was a peacoat. Got one on Overstock for $60. Also has a heavy LLBean winter coat and picked up a long wool coat for $24 at a thrift store this summer. Northface is not even on his list, but my kids are contrarian.

Son rarely wears coats but bought himself a peacoat. Looks good on him and can be casual or dressy. I think Boondock Saints was what made him consider buying a coat. Prior to that he only wore his ski jacket but only for extreme weather. Now he will wear the peacoat even if there is not extreme weather.

I have to say I know lots of friends of my son who are girls wear northface…guys too but not as much. That said, I think the variety of styles and brand names is extremely varied. I know that my son and many of his friends wear peacoats.

If he is going to do some interviews this winter, he should get a wool coat (whether it’s a peacoat or something more formal), not a down jacket or Northface.

You really have to know what his social group wears. If he hangs with a parka crowd, a peacoat is going to seem pretentious and fey. If he hangs with a peacoat crowd, a North Face parka would go over like a Nazi uniform.

I am voting for more than one coat.

Also depends on where the small town in the NE is. A pea coat will not keep him warm in Maine, but would in most parts of Connecticut or New Jersey.

So it will depend on his location and taste. I wouldn’t worry about interviews - a Northface is fine over a suit and you can take it off as you go into mt he interview office. As long as he’s appropriately dressed, no one would expect an overcoat.

You’re right oldfort. Hard to get by with just one coat - my s has a ski jacket, various fleece zip ups, a raincoat, and a dressier wool coat. If I had to pick one, I don’t think the wool coat makes the most sense - not as warm as a parka and it gets very cold in the northeast. What if he decides to go skiing or engage in any outdoor sport this winter? Would he really wear a peacoat?

I went to college in Massachusetts and wore a peacoat. I was always freezing.

So I would say depending on how far north he is, NF might be better.

A wool pea coat will NOT be as warm [ or as dry if it gets wet] as a waterproof, synthetic, hooded jacket lined with polarfleece. That’s why NF is so popular. I doubt today’s college students will care what others wore when they were in college decades ago, before polarfleece was even invented.

It’s Jake&Jones peacoat with a layer inside. [Gary Wool Jacket](<a href=“One World, One Philosophy, One Family | BESTSELLER”>One World, One Philosophy, One Family | BESTSELLER)

And saw another lightweight down jacket from Edd Bauer at $150, thinking to buy one online which can wear undernearth for more warmth.

I’ll ship it to S tomorrow. Thanks all of you for your input, and hope this thread can help others when they need it.
