Pell Grant Revoke in 2011 Garnishing Wages

A few months ago I received a letter in the mail saying my wages was going to be garnish because I own my college 5,550. The college stated in 2011 I never turned in my mother tax transcript but I did. I told them I could go to the IRS to get another copy. The school said that it’s too late because this was 4 years ago. I feel that it was proving I can’t afford to pay for college so why can’t I turn in the paper work the school claim to be missing? What should/can I do!?! please help me

You need to contact the school.

I did they’re saying it’s been so long that it’s nothing I can do but pay

So between 2011 and 2015 the school never contacted you for it or had any communications whatsoever with you about resubmitting the document?

Did the college grant you a final financial aid award? Did you stay enrolled as a full time student that full year?

There has to be more to this story.

Don’t they need a court order to garnish? If so, then can’t you fight it that way?

@kelsmom may be able to advise with this.

Oh, that’s the joy of student loans and other government owed loans. No garnishment necessary. Go right to available collection methods, which include garnishment of tax refunds, any other government issued funds, or bank accounts. No need for a judgment or court order.

Usually, the government will take the easiest route and go for the tax refunds.

Except it appears it’s the school that’s owed the money, not the government. The school likely never got or returned the Pell funds to the government at the time.

@twoinanddone this doesn’t sound like loans…and it doesn’t sound like the gov’t is doing this.

It sounds like the school is doing this.

It sounds like maybe he was subjected to a verification process, maybe never completed it, and he owes the school money???
