Pell Grant @ UChicago

Hi guys,

I have a question about Pell Grants at the University of Chicago.

I think I should receive a Pell Grant, but for some reason they're not letting me.

What happened was when I first filled out the FAFSA, I said that my parents were married (they are legally married), and I wasn't eligible for a Pell Grant. Now I changed the FAFSA to reflect the fact that they are technically separated (my dad lives overseas) and the EFC went way down and supposedly I qualify for a Pell Grant.

The Pell Grant is awarded based on just the custodial parent, but the assistant financial aid director I contacted said that the change in the FAFSA didn't matter and that I can't receive a Pell Grant.

Could someone please clarify on that?

Pell Grant is federal. UChicago isn't in charge of it. It doesn't matter anyway, because if you get a Pell Grant, Chicago will just take it. They took mine.

What do you mean by 'take it'?

If you receive, say, $20k in Chicago financial aid grants and you get $4k in Pell Grants, then your new financial aid will be $16k in Chicago financial aid grants. Your financial aid will just absorb the effect of the Pell Grant.

...that's some major b.s.

Welcome to Chicago.

They're figuring you need 20K, now you're get 4K--so you need 4K less.
