Your stats look good, but your ECs seem to be lacking focus. Are you looking at science or maybe, journalism? You should try to do a bit more on the major you’re looking at.

Apart from that, I think you’d have a good shot, I can’t quite comprehend your GPA, but the class rank is solid.

Thanks for your input. My school uses a 100 point GPA scale, so essentially it is my average grade in my academic subjects. I have had straight As throughout high school, so in one sense it could be considered a 4.0, or if you do a conversion directly to scale (dividing by 25) it works out to be 3.9.

I’m actually looking at political science. Yeah, I know; it doesn’t really fit in with the science ECs, but I have a passion for it. I plan on going to law school after undergrad. I think my work on student council, debate, and the newspaper are related to poli sci. I’m going to write my essay about losing my campaign for student council president, exploring the personal struggles and inner turmoil I faced while campaigning, and contrasting that with my state of mind as I campaigned for a change in school policy. It sounds kind of lame from that description but put in a narrative form I think it will be good.

If any the science ECs show intellectual curiosity and dedication.

Dude, you were a siemens regional FINALIST. I REALLY like that about your resume. Your scores could be stronger and your ECs may indeed lack some focus; however, Siemens really could pull you thru. Hmm…the tricky thing is you want to go into political science. Idk…can you say you are looking at biology or something and then just change your major rite after you get into Penn?

Your EC’s and GPA are not the problem, very respectable! It’s that darn SAT score of yours. Try taking the ACT as well when you re-take the SAT.

I don’t think my choice of major will be detrimental. Colleges are looking for bright and curious students, not qualified employees, so I don’t think I necessarily need to have qualifications in a certain field to be accepted. I think the science ECs show intelligence and determination beyond the classroom, but my passion is in fighting for ideas. I think that will come through in my essay.

As far as my SATs are concerned, I’m just concerned about my writing score. I tanked on my essay and knew it right away. I was also very rusty with my grammar rules. I think some determined prep will lead to a higher score. The only prep I did before i took the SATs was for math, which I sometimes struggle with under a time constraint. I’m content with my math and reading scores, though it’s quite possible I could raise both of them.
