Penn for less than 100K or Rutgers for free?

With Penn I pay less than half of sticker value because of tuition benefits from my parents' workplaces, so it should probably be about 80K for a four year education.

With the Presidential Scholarship at Rutgers everything is paid for me for four years. College for FREE omg.

My parents can afford Penn (IDK if it will be okay for them though which worries me slightly). I've already been accepted to Penn ED so this is a purely hypothetical question, but if you were accepted RD to Penn and Rutgers and had these options which do you choose?

what is the hypothetical major involved in this scenerio? What is the cost benefit of having the Penn degree?

Economics with a Pre-Med track.

Pre-med? If I were you I’d take Rutgers free and apply the 100k to med school.

first of all, congrats on penn ED. i’m guessing you got the presidential at rutgers (i found out i got it this morning, too!). if you are hoping to go into business, you can’t overestimate the value of a wharton degree. but, if you are definitely pre-med, i personally think a full ride would be better because med school is reaaaally expensive. as a pre-med myself, i’m applying to some top schools but i’m hoping to get into a bs/md program or to get a significant merit scholarship to a good school to save up for med school (my parents have said they will be able to pay for med school if i can get a full ride undergrad, and graduating with no debt would just be awesome)

My personal opinion … and that’s all it’s worth - this is a no brainer … Rutgers.

I should probably add that no matter where I was going to go, I would have to pay two years of the med school costs and they would try to cover the other two years.

And the Economics + Pre Med isn’t 100% definite yet.

My head says Rutgers, but it would be hard to pass up the opportunity to go to Penn.

And the Economics + Pre Med isn’t 100% definite yet… just assume it is for now.

“My parents can afford Penn (IDK if it will be okay for them though which worries me slightly).”

Do you mean to say that you applied ED to Penn without knowing this? Or was the deal that you would wait to decide once you’d heard from Rutgers as well? Quite frankly, all of your stressing about this is entirely moot until you have an answer from your parents about their ability and willingness to pay the difference in cost between these two universities.

If you are indeed set on pre-med, Rutgers for free is a better choice than Penn. It would allow you and your family to save what would have been spent on a Penn education, and put that money toward med school. As you know, med school is obscenely expensive, and students normally pay for it with loans. This means that they enter their profession with debt of $250k or more, and then spend the rest of their career paying it off. If you can avoid that kind of debt, you will have much more flexibility in your choice of specialization, and in location where you would like to work.

100K for 4 years at Penn is a bargain. It’s a great school. You’re very fortunate to have the option to attend. Go for it.

Alright, there was a family meeting tonight.

They are content with paying for Penn. However, they said that, even if I chose Rutgers, they cannot pay for at least half of med school’s four years unless one of them somehow gets a lot more money instantly. Unless I go to Penn medical school and save tuition costs, I’d have to loan for two years anyway. All of this may change in the future but this is how it stands now. Other than that, there’s nothing confirmed besides the fact that they will pay for two years of medical school (unless the price is startlingly high).

Basically, they’re paying the same amount for medical school, whether I chose Penn or Rutgers (not that I have a choice but lol)

If the can commit to half the cost of med school, and they are fine with paying for Penn, then you have a very good deal!

I would say you would have to go with Rutgers.

They are roughly equivalent academically.

Penn State would probably be a more fun place to go, but it’s not worth the extra $100,000.

Penn is not Penn State! Penn is the University of Pennsylvania, a private university. Penn State is a public flagship football factory.

^^ Welp if there’s anything I won’t like about going to Penn 30 years from now, it’s that
