Penn State a long distance from home

We are so excited that our son was admitted , however it is two airline flights away. it seems pretty daunting, as travel costs for two are $1200.00, not including the hotel. Are any parents having similar thoughts?

Most people from that far out of state here are well off enough that this cost doesn’t mean anything to them. While you’d likely want to get break access housing allowing him to stay on campus for all the school closures, it’s still a twice a year expense of flying him back and forth you’d need to consider at the minimum (probably 3 if you’d like to see him over the holidays) - depends on if you want to spend that extra money or not really.

I guess I understated the problem- the travel expenses are minor compared to the physical distance. Our older children needed our help the first two years in college, and we would not be able to help him in the event of an emergency, or for any other issues that may present themselves. As academically prepared as he may be, he
Still has some maturity issues to work out. We do not want to be “helicopter parents,” however we would feel better knowing that we could be there relatively quickly, if need be. The other schools that he was admitted to are much closer geographically, so of course it would simpler to pick one of those. Of course, we want what is best for him and his future.
