No, if you got into Eberly you would need to switch to DUS officially at orientation if you want to complete the Smeal pre-reqs. DUS means undeclared so you can pivot to any major. Eberly means specific science majors and you can only major within that college. You can only pivot to Smeal from DUS (OR if a Smeal pre-admit).
Has Smeal been admitting students yet? In-state and/or OOS?
Iād have some Smeal pre-reqs from AP credits already, does that matter? Also are double majors between colleges not possible? Iām guessing I canāt change to Smeal pre-admit atp
My son got in! This is one of his top 3 so I am so relieved. Saw no change in portal - just randomly checked this morning.
In State, highly competitive public HS
GPA 4.97 (W) / 3.98 (UW)
SAT 1340 (higher math)
8 AP, 14 Honors
3 year varsity athletics
1 Honor Society
Plays on a highly competitive national travel soccer team
a few other activities at school and a few comp sci/AP test performance awards
Fall 2024 UP - did not opt for summer on app
Engineering (Comp Sci)
No.
If you are admitted to Eberly, you can ask to switch to DUS during orientation, explaining youāre not sure you want to major in science anymore (that happens all the time). If youāre not admitted to Eberly you can ask for reconsideration for DUS (ie., youāll get a 2nd chance at admission but admission is more competitive in that ā2ndā round.)
No. it used to be that housing was determined by the order you put your deposit, but itās not that way any longer. Just like admissions, itās a random selection. All freshmen WILL get housing, but they may not get their first choice housing.
Ok perf I was admitted to Eberly guess Iāll just switch later then if I commit thank you!
SUMMER ADMISSION REMINDERS
Just posting a few summer (LEAP) admission reminders because Iāve seen a few questions about it posted.
When you apply for fall with a summer option checked, the process works like this:
~ Can they give you admission to your major for fall?
If yes, you are accepted.
If NO:
~Can they admit you for your major for summer?
If yes, you are accepted.
If NO:
They offer you admission to your second choice campus for the 2+2 program
What that means is if you are offered summer start, you have ALREADY been denied fall. So there is no appeal possible to fall without changing something substantially about your application.
If you are offered summer, thatās when you can start. Donāt check the summer start option if you canāt go in the summer.
LEAP is the summer start program at Penn State and it is wildly successful in that students love it, get 6 credits out of the way, make fast friends, and acclimate to campus before 40,000 students descend. Iāve had two kids get accepted for summer start and one that got accepted for fall start and chose to start in the summer instead because of how much her siblings loved LEAP. So donāt despair if you get offered summer. The only downside is the extra cost for housing. The credits go towards your degree so there is no waste there.
What is the time commitment for LEAP? Is it possible or practical to work during the summer session? The extra housing cost plus a loss of income could be real double whammy.
You can work during the summer, but you are taking 6 credits in 6 weeks, so you have class daily. Youād just have to work around that.
Here is a link to the LEAP program: LEAP Program at University Park | Summer Session
When you pick a LEAP Pride, you take 6 credits in those subjects, which are usually gen ed classes that will work for anything, and everyone in your pride takes those same classes. This is how students create tight bonds because they are living together and taking classes together for 6 weeks.
@jlhpsu Does UP have accepted students days throughout the year?
Do they break it down by college?
Yes they do have accepted student programming by college. You can see the events here:
The next EMS one is virtual Dec 14th (a Thursday) at 7pm.
I assume they will post day-long in-pereson weekend events after the holiday break?
DS was admitted yesterday to College of IST, for Applied Data Science! Guess what? He now wants to switch over to Business. Is that something he can apply to do now or is he better off taking business pre-req courses, do well and transfer in a year or two? We are OOS so want to make sure we spend our money wisely.
Edit: Nevermindā¦ Just saw that this question has been asked and answered. He needs to switch to DUS to have a shot at Smeal later.
If you applied EA and did not check LEAP and you get deferred or waitlisted can then change to YES you will do the LEAP program?
Although Applied Data Science is an AWESOME major so he might change his mind again!
To keep both possibilities open, he should take the following courses during his 1st year: whatever version of English composition heās placed into/prefers, Macro&Micro Econ (if Schreyer itās a must-have as Honors), Stats 200, World Labguage 3, DS 200, Math 140-141, COMPSC 131-132, and āfreshman seminarā of his choice (really, a methods course that is just 1 credit where even lost freshmen can get an A as long as they just do the assignement, so instead of complaining itās too easy smart freshmen do the basic work and take the easy a because there are precious few of those.) If he has AP credit itās easier because he has a bit more flexibility. Beware that Calc2 is a weedout class and Calc BC is recommended as prep. (Students can always try to get an A in a 140 sample final to see how ready they are).
You get neither waitlisted nor deferred. If you didnāt check āsummerā and didnāt get your favorite campus or are rejected, you can immediately request reconsideration, ie., theyāll re evaluate your application for an āeasierā (similar or different) major and/or Summer (LEAP).
Thank you. I was unaware of this.
He applied for political science
Is anyone from Psych hearing back?
