Yes, that’s what I was afraid of. Coming from a large and competitive high school where she thrived socially, there is no way she could go to a small commonwealth campus. Hopefully, this helps her see that she NEEDS to seek out other schools. Thank you for your input!
“Direct ADMIT” Nursing kids that are deferred the first round, not the original 360 Accepted, ar the “fill-ins” for the original 360 that do not end up attending. Like my S26 who ended up staying in Florida.
My younger S28 who is waiting on his PSU admission to Engineering was “told by his recruiter” he may get an admittance before Thanksgiving due to his “High Performer/Stats”.
Legacy (Mom)
SAT 1550, Math 790,
GPA UW 4.0,
National Merit Scholar and ALL Math and Science APs completed with 4/5’s.
My son also had “Doctor/Nursing Shadowing” hours and participated in his high school Medicine Program. Where they explore different Medical fields, field trips, speaker series, that kind of thing.
I assume midnight, not sure.
also, Penn State does not superscore
@jimdlt1 You may be referring to D26… and I’m glad they changed the process.
I believe it was Class of 2022 - the first year of EA, Admissions was overwhelmed. Maybe it was the first year of the common app. They have barely had a steady state year in the last five years. (EA, common app, TO, new director, etc.) EVERY direct admit nursing student was deferred from EA (as I recall). I can’t recall the year … maybe one of the other old-timers could @jlhpsu @greenbutton . There was so much negative feedback, they haven’t had the same issue again (thankfully).
As to your younger who is awaiting his decision, he certainly seems like a strong candidate and I would imagine he would hear before Thanksgiving. I’ve had lots of kids stop by the last football tailgate of the season to celebrate! (this is over the last 15 years)
good luck to him.
@leeny425 she might be fine if her HS is a strong HS and she has the pre-reqs and ECs they are looking for. Just putting it out there that it is an extremely competitive program.
good luck!
I’ve been a little busy with life lately and haven’t been able to check in here as often - what are you waiting for? If you wanted to apply EA you had to apply by November 1. Not necessarily on Nov 1. If fact if you apply Nov 1 but your application isn’t complete until Nov 2 - you are often in the next wave.
If son applied through Common App today and does not get the SRAR link until tomorrow, will the application still be Early Action eligible?
He very well may - but keep in mind that Penn State admission “recruiters” are volunteers who don’t work with the actual admissions department and have no bearing on your application. They are knowledgeable in the same way those who’ve been on CC for years are. Meaning, they can offer advice based on historical data.
So yes, high stat kids often hear earlier. But not all high stat kids hear early. The general consensus is that if you hear early, you were likely a high stat kid, but not all high stat kids hear early. Decision have historically been pretty random.
That being said, I see no issue in your son being offered admission - regardless of when he hears.
Applications have to be considered complete by Nov 1 in order to be in the EA round. That means SRAR, test scores, etc…So it’s likely that the application will be moved into the next pool which will have a decision by Jan 31. That being said - there have been cases where that deadline has been a little loose. I’d call admissions to ask what application pool your son will be in in so that you know what to expect. There are people every year who expect a decision by Dec 24 and then are so disappointed when they call and find out they actually didn’t make the deadline.
I don’t believe that’s accurate. If a student submits at 11:59pm on 11/1, they’re in EA.
It’s hard for them to submit supplemental materials until they have access to the portal.
EDIT: that said, I have no idea how long the school will allow for the missing items to be provided. The same question was asked on the Northeastern thread and a poster there said the deadline to be considered for EA is 11/1 for the reason stated above.
Yes - I am hoping there is some sort of grace period for this.
You don’t need portal access to submit SRAR, scores, etc.
Just FYI: The school website says all has to be received by today for EA consideration. Your child doesn’t need to wait for the portal to submit the SRAR. If you’re still crunching tonight, get the SRAR in!
The school website says “To apply Early Action, students must submit a complete application (the application itself and the Self- Reported Academic Record [SRAR]) must be received by the deadline of November 1. If opting to include standardized test results (official scores from either the SAT or ACT) must also be received by the deadline of November 1.”

Absolutely.Right after sending common app to PSU, my student went to the SRAR website, sent it to them, and later received notification from the school that her app was complete. No need to wait!
She did submit her application a while back and her ACT was submitted with it. My question was, what was the latest time that she could switch to test optional if she changed her mind about the submitting the score without missing the early action deadline. I didn’t know if that had to be done on the 31st of October or today. I spoke with someone from admissions today that confirmed that she has until midnight tonight to change it if she wants to.
I stand corrected.
The MyPennState portal has a different display from a few years ago when my older daughter applied. Does anyone know if there is still something with the Test Optional selection on the page when a decision is close? It’s not a colored button anymore. Instead it’s in the left navigation on the page. When you hover over it, it gives the message that you can change this option. Just curious if this is still something to look for on the page while waiting for a decision.
Correct, the deadline was 11:59pm last night (11/1) to have all materials in to be considered EA. That said, you can still change your test optional option up until a decision is reached.
That’s why the Test Optional button has historically been considered a precursor to getting a decision. If the TO button disappeared, it meant that your decision was forthcoming.
From the Penn State website:
Students are able to change the response to the test-optional question. The request to alter the response to the test-optional question must be submitted prior to the University issuing an admission decision.
If you have applied to the Accelerated Premedical-Medical Program, you may only change your test-optional answer prior to the program’s October 10 deadline.
The test-optional answer can only be changed by following the process outlined in the student’s MyPennState portal and clicking the “Change My Test-Optional Answer” button; or by emailing admissions@psu.edu using the subject line “Change Test-Optional Answer” before an admission decision is made by the University.
