Penn State vs. Pitt

Yes, if you do not get any money from PSU then UB has Aerospace Engineering. Did you apply to UB as a financial safety?

Yes. Luckily I applied to UB. I got accepted to PSU. There's a really good chance i'll be accepted at UB right?

I would hope so. Especially since they are the only SUNY that offers what you are looking for. That way you have some options when the finaid offers come in. Although UB is a lot farther away from NYC than PSU!

Let's say PSU do offer me aid. Right now tuition + [everything else] costs me 35k/yr. How much do you think a PSU education is worth, if not 35k/yr? Also, if PSU offers me some aid, is there a chance that they might give me less to none the following year?

The most PSU could offer you is $3,000 (give or take a few hundred) a year, and that's only if you get into the Schreyers Honors College (which is as selective as the ivy league).

The colleges (Eberly, EMS, Engineering, Liberal Arts, etc.) offer their own scholarships as well, which I think are awared on stats/application info...but these tend be <$5,000/year.

Oh crap. I guess I'll be paying no less than 30k/yr.

I'm telling you.

It's a very risky move to go to Penn State.

Do you suggest me going to Purdue instead? I doubt the price of Purdue will be that much less.

If you cannot find another school which costs less than PSU then I guess its ok to come....but if you have a safety which is more feasible financially, then I would suggest that. (I am assuming that you not expecting any need-based aid?)

What is "need-based aid?" I will probably get into SUNY-Buffalo, but I really want to go to PSU though.

It would be nice to see you there killer. I just checked my assigment and I will be placed in a supplemental room with 5 people from philadelphia. However, you should consider the financial aid packages carefully; you wouldn't want to be in deep debt for a huge chunck of your life.

Assignment Information

Sorry, no assignments available to review.

How did yo find out you have been placed in a supplemental room? Why doesn't my assignment say anything? When did you send in your enrollment fees? They received mine on 12/11/06, and my assignment page says the above. Also, is it possible for PSU to give me more aid during my second year, or do they give the same amount?

Sorry, can't help you there. Anyways, what major did you apply to again?

Also, don't get too fixated on rankings and prestige, it is important to go to your selected school with an open mind and will to make the best out of the resources available. Emerge yourself in the environment, stay focused, and strive to reap the opportunities--that way you will be successful regardless of which school you attend.

good luck man!

You did not get your assignment because you are not starting until July or August. Don't know about summer session but if you begin in the fall, you will get your room assignment/roommate info in July.
Mark is starting Spring session in 2 weeks. So it is about time they told him where he will be...

I am majoring in Aerospace Engineering. I have been admitted for Fall 07, but I want to do the LEAP program over the summer for easy transition into college. So I will be emailing the admissions office about this on January 3rd when they come back from holiday break.

Penn State is excellent for Aerospace Engineering. Does Pitt even often that?

No, Pitt does not have aerospace.

lil_killer129 -- Looks like my kid is making the same decisions you are. It's coming down to PSU, Pitt and SUNY. An older brother went to SUNY, but is going to be a transfer student at PSU next year. He changed majors to a major not offered by SUNY. He liked SUNY, and it was cheaper than the PA schools even though we were out of state. He was able to have a single there, which was really nice (and he had no trouble in meeting people even though he had a single) with some of the cost saving.

The kid who's trying to decide on a school now is not sure about a major. So far choices look like SUNY's guaranteed pharmacy program, Pitt's neuroscience major or possibly biochemistry at PSU. SUNY also offers a unique nuclear medical technology BS, but I think my kid would stick with pharmacy there. Ohio U has offered a lot of money to make it the cheapest choice so far, but its biosciences program doesn't look as strong.

Good luck -- it's nice to have such good choices.

need based aid is determined by how much money your parents can actually pay towards your school (FAFSA). PSU is a great school, and if the money is close between PSU and another school id suggest PSU. If you can get through your first year with a good GPA, youll have a great oppurtunity at scholarships.
