do you actually read every single word? i try to, because i'm worse at skimming than i am at reading, and i don't get very much out of skimming. i'm reading a lot of fun things (ancient greek novels, english novels, etc.), but even that gets tiring at about 200 pages a week, including noticing small details (which means having to read word for word), and comprehending them well (study questions). i try to make an effort to read the newspaper everyday too (takes off an hour a night), plus i read this forum (haha). i'm also a manuscript reader at my internship, so add on another 50-100 pgs/wk. have to read some stuff in chinese every day too. i'm doing a lot of fun things, but even that's making me very tired. i'm just a little exhausted from reading.. i feel like doing a math problem! an easy one, that is.. just interested in how people shake up on doing the same things over and over again.. even if it's something they like.

I'm currently in 4 history classes (including my thesis seminar where we read a lot and write a 30 page paper) as well as an upper level english class with grad students in it. It is impossible for me to read everything. You read what you need to know, and cut corners, because it is impossible to read everything. The only class I read everything for is my thesis seminar, because it is going to be my history focus if I go to grad school.

My bf is an english major... whenever I tell him I have too much to read he just tells me to read the first and last sentence of the paragraph.. if you don't understand from those two then read the entire one.

I've never actually done that, but it seems to have worked for him. Hes a senior and has been on the dean's list all semesters except one...

200 pages a week is less than 30 a day.

if you skim and don't get anything... then you better read. Or learn to skim. S0ad offers a common solution.

Of course, if you can actually speed read with understanding, then you are in great shape... obviously not many people can do this, but it can be learned (at least somewhat)

how many times are you going to post the same thread?

what are you talking about? i've only posted this once.

soccerguy,
if only that could be spread out evenly like that..

oh.. there was a problem with the connection. thought it wasn't working so hit the button too many times. it happens. mods, delete!

I think most people in reading-intensive majors enjoy reading and don't have a lot of trouble with it (probably why they picked that major) -- I'm an English major, and I don't have a lot of difficulty finishing all the readings for my classes - some of them are pretty dry, literary criticism types -- but I'm not always interested by it. Sometimes, I try and read it and then if I'm still confused look for a summary online to see if that helps me understand it better.
