Peoples.

Okay, I was just wondering, as were my friends and I. How would you describe people at UChicago? I mean, are they nice, mean, funny, weird? What? Give me your best description. Please of course.

Nothing like the posters on CC would make you think.

The best way I would describe it is a group of people that don’t care about how much money they will make or how much better they are than other people so they can ‘beat the grade curve.’ At the same time, they study super super hard. IMO Chicago/MIT have hardest curriculums in world. Basically they’re people that educate themselves purely for the sake of being educated. Socially, they are fairly chill. It’s not your college scene where you have a big frat party every night, but there will be a party almost every night. The police are more likely to get drunk with you than do something if they ‘catch you.’ It rarely gets out of hand though.

People party hard and study hard, even if that’s a bit cliche.

The people/social atmosphere is literally ideal. It’s the smartest people in the world with ambition but no competitive spirit. I mean you can play water polo with someone who helped create nuclear fission or something but you wouldn’t know it.

Adding to what LearningLover said:

-- Background doesn’t matter; you can come from absurd mountains of wealth or be fully dependent on Financial Aid. No one cares, and almost no one advertises their background. I just learned the other day that one my closest friend’s dad collects absurdly nice cars and they have like 5 houses. Never would have guessed.

-- Sometimes the line between an exceedingly intellectually curious student and obnoxious ‘that’ kid is crossed. We probably have more ‘that’ kids than most schools; it’s easy to cross the line, I guess. Don’t worry, everyone in your class hates them too. Oh, and the professors do too. Don’t get down about it.

-- Everyone has a crazy story. Everyone has done something mind-blowing; the trick is that you’ll rarely hear about it, because no one really flaunts what they do.

Play water polo with someone who created nuclear fission? I’m intrigued. Is that what kids are doing in high school nowadays?
Also, how can you say that the social scene is ideal without qualifying that statement? Ideal for whom? The computer nerd who wants to be the next Bill Gates or the charismatic jock who wants to be the next Michael Jordan?

I don’t understand. Computer nerds who want to be the next Bill Gates can be as interested in a certain social scene as a charismatic jock who wants to be the next Michael Jordan. What specifically do you want to know about the social scene? From my understanding, there’s something for everyone; usually multiple parties per night on the weekends, events hosted by RSOs every weekend, a movie every night at Doc, plenty more to do in different neighborhoods of Chicago, etc

^I’d like to back up what little penguin said. I’m an EA admit and I just did an overnight campus stay last friday. I lucked out and got some awesome hosts. If you are a really social party person, I got the idea that there are frequently parties for kids to go to on weekends. My hosts and I went to a huge frat party, for example… But that same night there was also a huge fashion show that was put on by UChicago, and an improv comedy show by UC students. People in the house I was in went to all of those things, and some just went downtown. Basically there are things for every different kind of person and there are enough people to do all of those things. From my understanding, the University of Chicago is very much what you make of it… much like all other colleges.

They’re great, (wicked) smart, fascinated about the world and having good discussions while being open-minded about it. And a little to extraordinarily quirky.
