My dd just received an email to log into the Wavenet account. Under financial aid it says offers:
Pepperdine Grant $21,000
Regents Scholar $30,000
Could this be accurate?
Does this mean they are offering her $51,000 in aid?
Wonderful, yes that is what it means! Did that come today or Friday? Congrats!
She had 3.86 UW GPA and 4.3/4.5 Weighted. A four-page resume with numerous athletics and awards and service projects and leadership. She applied test-optional. She also participated last summer with CrossWays (a Christian leadership summit through Pepperdine for HS students) so I’m sure that also helped her - and she was selected for a $2k/grant through that program for an upcoming summer missions trip. But even with all of that - $36k isn’t enough. $80k/year for a bachelor’s degree just sounds insane to me!
Under Financial Aid, it says “Pepperdine Grant” for $35,600/year. It expects her to take out the rest in loans.
@college2019bound Would you mind giving your daughter unweighted GPA and ACT/SAT scores. Thanks and congrats!
@hochimochi congrats! Would u mind listing your unweighted GPA and ACT/SAT scores? Thanks !!
Unweighted 4.0
Weighted 4.65
SAT 1410
Many AP, honors and EC’s
My daughter with similar stats was given $10,500 per year in scholarship. That is like $250 per year at a state school - don’t bother. Has taken it off our radar unfortunately. I could not agree more that no matter the quality, my child wants to go to grad school, and $80K a year for an undergrad degree is just foolish. She just got accepted to Purdue with in-state tuition and scholarships - and has Indiana Univ. with in-state tuition and scholarships. Both of those business schools are even more highly regarded and at 4 years for much less than the cost of one a Pepperdine!
Just FYI. Just talked to admission counselor and they said ACT/SAT were not considered at all for regent scholarship. My daughter got a 36 on ACT and it was not looked at. Did everyone else know test scores would not be looked at for the scholarship? I never saw it.
Same credentials here too and some merit offered from Pepperdine but def not enough, esp considering Cali may still be “closed” in the fall - so far leaning toward a southern school with amazing merit and that will be open in the fall!
hey guys! Since we’re sharing scholarships here’s mine:
Pepperdine Grant: 46,600
Christian leadership Scholarship: 5,000
Total: $51,600 in aid I don’t have to pay back!!!
Also is the cost for sure going to be 80k this year??? THATS CRAZY. I want to go so bad but this might be a huge issue.
California schools ( at least UC’s and CSU’s) have announced that they will be open this fall, and maybe even this spring semester!
My daughter has an unweighted 4.0 (all advanced classes) and a 35 ACT. When she did did not receive a Regents or Seaver scholarship I contacted an admissions counselor and was told they did not consider test scores this year. I think that was a ridiculous decision by Pepperdine. However, my daughter had already pretty decided on Baylor and their University Scholars Honors Program.
My biggest problem with how they handled this, is not telling people ahead of time ACT/SAT would not be considered for scholarships. You have to be open and honest about the process. When the decision was made to not count ACT scores, it should have been announced. We knew UC schools were not looking at tests, so that’s fine. But when you advertise that you tests will be looked at if they are sent in, and then aren’t for scholarships, that is kind of tough.
Have you looked at the description of the Regent Scholarship? Test scores aren’t mentioned as factoring in at all.
Taken directly from the “Academic Scholarship” section of the Pepperdine website:
“Regent Scholars represent the students admitted to Pepperdine with the most outstanding academic achievements, based on a combination of the highest grade point averages (as Pepperdine calculates them), demonstrated course rigor, and overall university fit.”
Then they have changed the wording. Several months ago, I spoke with an admissions counselor who said test scores were a significant factor in the selection process. She said based on my daughter’s GPA and TEST SCORES, she was “a shoe-in” for Regents. (And I am quoting her verbatim.) Additionally, the financial aid calculator asked for test scores–not sure if it still does.
That’s very unfortunate if things have changed recently. That would be extremely upsetting, to say the least!
This is correct. Same exact same thing happened with my daughter. And even the quote above does not state they won’t look at test scores. Again, just say clearly “test scores will not be taken into account for regent scholarship”. Then I understand. That is what the UC schools did. Just been nice to have known In advance what the rules were.
With a larger competitive pool, I think they had so many from which to choose.
Perhaps most influential in Pepperdine’s shift came after September’s ruling that UC must suspend their consideration of tests in the admissions process this year. Pepperdine was already test optional (and maybe they too will phase them out altogether).
The topic of tests is controversial with good points from all angles from my perspective (generally - but this year is different without fair and equal access).
But, I do understand the frustration as you feel blindsighted. Admissions could have been a bit more forthcoming - agreed.
Yes, the importance of testing is definitely a big topic. And not one I’m trying to bring up. My point is simply that it needed to be made VERY clear that tests will have no impact on scholarships, so kids and families don’t waste time on testing when it’s not needed, and kids expectations are set correctly for what to expect.
And how about that 80k price tag!!! Wow. I emailed finance and it sounds like it will go up $2,000 to $2,500 a year. Looking at close to 90k senior year. Crazy!!
