What percentage of students at Kalamazoo are from the upper Midwest?

If I recall, 1/3 of this year's freshman class is OOS. The class profile on the website needs to be updated since it's a 3-year average for the Classes of 2007/08/09 and does not include current students from the Classes of 2010 and 2011. For that 07-09 time period, it says the college drew from 38 states and 12 countries, and the five states with the largest enrollment on campus were Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, and Indiana.

So this is a school that draws most of its enrollment from the Midwest, two thirds from Michigan and most of the other third from other nearby states?

As mentioned in my previous post, the class profile information has not been updated on the website so you'd have to obtain current stats from the admissions office. I'd say 1/3 OOS is quite good for a regional LAC and is a higher % than many state flagships...UNC-Chapel Hill, UT-Austin, CU-Boulder etc. Even MSU's undergraduate enrollment is at 88% in-state this year. Many LAC's are regional in their draw.

FYI, I spoke to Dean of Admissions Eric Staab last week. He said that the college, under its new president, has increased its national recruiting efforts. At one point, he said--the '70s or '80s--the college drew about half its students from out of state. In the past few years the school has moved back in that direction, and he made clear that the trend will continue.

It confirms the point:

"College officials are now looking ahead, positioning for the college's next chapter, which [President] Wilson-Oyelaran said includes internationalizing the campus and curriculum, increasing the percentage of foreign and out-of-state students and improving its diversity along racial, ethnic and economic lines."
