My son will be applying for admission for Fall 2021. We have already visited some schools, but are relying on our own research and suggestions of private instructors. We have visited 5 schools and taken lessons at each. He really only liked two of those. What are the top 5 public universities and top 5 private/conservatories for percussion studies? I need unbiased opinions.
@percussionmom75 - a good start would be to look at last year’s (class of 2023) list of prescreen schools. There were two of us with percussion major kids auditioning. There are a lot of great schools - it all comes down to fit and who your son wants to work with, where you live, how much you want to spend etc.
Hello,
The serious percussion students from my kids’ high school who went on to study percussion performance went to Berkley School of Music, CMU, University of Michigan, Northwestern University. There are others who went on to study music education as well and some have gone to Duquesne University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Penn State University. Good luck
This really belongs in the Music Majors area of this site.
My son plans to major in percussion performance. Much of the research available provides stats for the music school as a whole. What are the top 10-12 schools for percussion performance?
If your son has any interest in new classical percussion performance - then he should check out Bard Conservatory & College where the percussion program is run by So Percussion https://www.bard.edu/news/releases/pr/fstory.php?id=1931
