Where can we access a listing of professional college counselors that specialize in helping students prepare for auditions for undergraduate audition-based programs? I have also posted this question in the theater/drama section.

Hi, there is a thread about this in the Music Major section. It is called
College Counseling for Music Major? Hope it helps.

There have been threads on the MT forum discussing this question. Here’s one of them:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/803116-college-counselor-mt.html?highlight=coach

My D worked with Musical Theatre College Auditions. They’re amazing. Felt very prepared. Worked with several different coaches on their staff and learned a lot from each of them. Loved the selections they picked for her for her audition songs and monologues.

I don’t know if there’s “a list”.

Don’t know about a list per se either, but my daughter is a client of MTCA as well. They do a great job with the kids and the adults! If you google Musical Theater College Auditions you will find their info. While it is not inexpensive (what is in this whole process?), I feel like it is well worth it especially if you are clueless (like me). There is also a great deal of advice here that really can set you in the right direction. Good luck!

MTCA was great for my daughter. Her sessions were held via Skype. My daughter worked with both a monologue and vocal coach. They are very professional, lots of fun to work with and know the process and business. Adept at helping to choose the right material too. We were also clueless about this process, and I thought the cost was reasonable and money well spent. I highly recommend them.

MTCA all the way!! PM me, I’d be happy to answer any questions.

You can find someone local and worthwhile. We used a local actress/audition coach and she was wonderful. She helped choose monologues and worked closely with my D. Every kid she has coached over the years has gotten into their first-choice school.

My daughter approached it similarly to Skwidjymom’s D. Her voice teacher at the time also performed regionally and worked with her on the singing aspects of the audition, including acting the song. We found a local actor, who also coached, who worked with my daughter on monologues. He also had her speak her songs and worked with her on acting them as if they were a monologue.

If the performance teachers your student is currently working with do not fit what you are looking for and you are having difficulty getting local suggestions, check whether there is a performing arts/theater alliance or some such organization in your area. Often, such an organization can offer suggestions from among its members. Also, check with colleges in your area that have theater and vocal performing programs. Often the faculty at college programs are also involved with outside private teaching or there may be graduates who are performing locally and who desire to supplement their income by offering private coaching.

Same here MichaelNKat! We love to support our local artists and have worked with many awesome coaches/teachers in our area…matter of fact one of them is a veteran poster here…onstage! My D’s acting coach is an equity actress who also substitute teaches theater in a public school and performs regularly in shows here in Northeast PA. I really like having face to face interaction and it’s nice being able to personally share successes with the people who have helped you get there!

I’d just like to add that I think it’s important to make sure that the people you hire are knowledgeable about the COLLEGE audition scene. It’s important to have a good working relationship so that you can grow in your work but it’s equally important that whoever you hire be familiar with the programs that you are auditioning for because it’s not a one size fits all process. It’s great if they have other talented and successful students but it’s even better if some of their students got into the same programs you are interested in.

I wouldn’t change any of the professionals that my S worked with to prepare for his auditions but if we had to do it again, I may have hired someone in addition to these coaches specifically to help him select his monologues based on what schools and programs he was auditioning for. I felt that this was the weakest link in the process for my S. The coaching was terrific but, after the fact, I’m not sure that the working actor we hired had enough experience with college auditions to know all of the dos and don’ts of the process. We’ll see soon enough. And yet, in the end, I’m sure it will work out just as it is meant to be.

Another important thing is networking and asking all around. My son only found his fabulous monologue coach, who has helped many kids get into top programs, because he happened to have become acquainted with another student who used her.

The coach in question only takes on kids who have been referred to her personally.

MTCA all the way! Great advice and support for parents and kids. They even come to unified auditions to support their clients and hold mock auditions in the fall to help prepare the kids for the grueling audition process.
