The condescension and snide tone are really way out of line in this place, Cato. There are plenty of other fora out there where your "voice" would be welcome, and I think it has been, at least by some who share your joy in denying others' hope for the future. You're not addressing uneducated, ignorant people here. I don't think even the students whose thread you (and we) have usurped here would believe your unsupportable nastiness. If they do, then they will deny themselves a potentially great experience, and I am sorry for that possibility.

I am done with you. I hope the influence of what you have said here is proportionate to what it deserves.

Well concerneddad if you really "have the greatest sympathy for those kids and parents who have seen their programs cut" you might join some of the rest of us in demanding an explanation of why they ARE being cut. At this point in time we have a ukase from Cowen and a statement that the order is "irreversible". I think the largest mass termination of tenured faculty in the history of higher education might require some proof of financial exigency on the part of Tulane's administration particularly in light of the fact that there is apparently at least $1.5 million in the budget to support Lusher, a public school* and $10 or $12 million more to buy an apartment* building, and tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands more to lease cruise ships, and resources for Dillard and Xavier and heck even university money for a housekeeper for #2 Audobon (not that I am suggesting Scott clean his own toilette or even hire Merry Maids out of his own $486,000 a year* Tulane salary - he might assign it as mandatory community service* to one of the incomming freshman for academic credit).

What do you think?

Note everything denoted above with an * us a fact. It might not be one you particularly care to hear and it certainly does not appear to be one you care to address but say I don't have any facts in my posts because that simply is not true.

Now we can end THIS thread if you like. It has obviously become discomfitting to you and at least one other poster but I do not intend to stop posting entirely unless you arbitrarily use your power as moderator to ban me.

1) FACT: The School of Medicine took the LARGEST HIT -- a school that my son is applying for early admission to, so don't you dare say that we are not affected by the cuts -- you know far less than you think you know -- and not as much as would know if you listened instead of spoke.

2) FACT: The Medical took the largest hit because being part of the NOLA community, there is simply not the population to support the huge clinical practice that Tulane had built up over the years.

3) FACT: See to it that students and Profs have housing, and the children of profs have a school to attend is -- to my mind -- a benefit to the whole of the Tulane community. It is certainly not spending $$ like a drunken sailor.

4) FACT: Helping sister institutions by allowing them access to facilties is an act of mercy, again not the act of a spendthrift administration.

Your inanbility to see the "other guys" point of view is the result of your myopia, not the failing of someone who regularly expresses his opinion -- good and bad -- on these boards. Long after you tire of your rantings here, and move on to some other website to spew your vitriol, I will be right here moderating and trying to give information to people will to keep an open mind.

And no, I would not use my "power" -- as little as that may -- to silence you. As long as your posts remain within the bounds of decency and within the TOS, you can express any point of view you like.

But, here is a suggestion: look around, has anyone chimed in? At this point, I simply do not see this thread going anywhere. You have nothing new to say -- at leats nothing you have not said several times already. So, perhaps your time would be better spent trying to get the answers to your questions, rather than wasting your breath here.

And, FWIW, my opinion about the cuts have been made known to the administration via direct communication. And, the content of my message might surprise you. But, unlike you, I will not string up a perosn, or an administartion just because they gored my ox.

"FACT: See to it that students and Profs have housing, and the children of profs have a school to attend is -- to my mind -- a benefit to the whole of the Tulane community."

Of course that is presumming that Cowen's BuRP (Bold university Renewal Plan) hasn't renewd you right out of the Tulane community.

"FACT: Helping sister institutions by allowing them access to facilties is an act of mercy, again not the act of a spendthrift administration."

Yes we don't have classrooms for Tulane engineers but we have them for Xavier pharmacists. There is nothing wrong with helping your neighbor provided you have taken care of yourself first. Here is a Fact for you - Tulane's Motto "Non Sibi Sed Suis" translation "not for one's self, but for one's own." That basically the exact opposite of "If it is not a problem for me it is not a problem" isn't it?

If you have lobbied the administration to come forward with a justification for these moves and a public accounting of the money spent and to consult with all members of the community before making rash "irreversible" changes then the more power to you but only public pressure is going to bring about change.

OK, so you have had you say. We obviously disagree on several points, and I dare say it is a safe bet neither one of us is about to change the others mind. So, perhaps you would agree with me that there is not much else to say about this topic here. Maybe now, this thread can return to address the OP's question.

This is also a good reminder for all (including myself): we should all be careful not to hijack someone else's thread. If we have something to say beyond the OP's question, we should simply start a new thread. I say this not just because it is unfair to the OP, but it works against more spirited conversation. Just think how much input this could have gotten if the new thread was named: "Cowen: Sinner or Saint?"
