Personal Character

What kind of person does the MIT or any school's engineering departments want??
Like honest??, or creative, confident??

Yes, yes, and yes. :)

They're looking for people who are passionate, creative, hard-working, determined, confident, compassionate, and able to take some hard knocks without despairing.

I wrote a blog entry that I liked (here) about the characteristics of MIT students. I was writing more about what people end up like than what they came in like, but I think it's applicable.

how does honest oppose creative and confident?

honesty goes without saying - creativity is impossible to 'fake', and confidence...well, why yes!

But obviously you don't have to be the most perfect human being ever -- I myself am not the most confident person in the world (hoo boy), and I was still admitted! After all, we're all still awkward teenagers - confidence is a trait that comes up later for a lot of people.

Though, of course, you've still got to be passionate and hard-working, etc - how else would you survive at MIT? ;)

no. mit wants liars, cheaters, and they're currently short on serial killers.

so if youre a serial killer, you're a shoe-in.

...just kidding.

what kinda question is that? =P

^ so that's why they have the question about any previous crimes. That explains a lot.

In response to the OP, yes - they want people who are those things and have other fabulous qualities as well. However, I think it is important to realize that you should not try and mold your personality into whatever you think MIT is looking for. More than anything else, I get the sense that MIT wants you to be you, not an idealized representation.

"so that's why they have the question about any previous crimes. That explains a lot."

Oh, I didn't know this. Anyone knows when the Crime deadline is? I mean, if I kill someone today, will it get in time for RD consideration? Or is a firm sentence required?

You can send in a letter updating your file. Presumably your right to a speedy trial would at least ensure that you'd be indicted before the selection committees convene.

It's important to include a copy of your mug shot, so you should hurry -- it takes a long time for the police department to process mug shot duplication requests.

We seem to have a current excess of guys who run around punching girls in the face, however. See Bexley's upcoming i3 video (it's somewhere on youtube atm.. "Spam Kills") for reference.

mit sarcasm cracks me up. thanks guys.
