Petroleum Engineering Job With ME Degree

I'm going into my last year as an ME and am looking for advice on how to get into a petroleum engineering position after graduation.

I have a solid GPA and will have 3 internships by the time I graduate, none of which are PE though. I have 2 internships in energy services and one at a utility (natural gas) company. So even though I'll have good experience, I feel like they won't help me out much when trying to get into the industry.

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to apply to PE internships even though I'll be graduated. I don't really want to go to grad school for PE so it would be great if I could get any advice on how to get into the industry as an ME.

Petroleum Engineering Companies hire ME students all the time, sometimes as Petroleum engineers. Just apply and hope for the best; even if you end up with a mechanical job at a petroleum company, its easier to transfer into that role once your in the company.

An option a lot of guys I know took also is to hire on to an oilfield service company like Schlumberger or Baker Oil Tools and work for 3-5 years gaining oilfield experience. A lot of major operators treat service comapnies like training grounds. Most oilfield jobs eventually lead to Houston, so be prepared for that. If you get into the drilling or completions end of things expect long hours, hard work and lots of middle of the night phone calls. The pay makes up for it (most of the time). Also be prepared to travel quite a but and spend a lot of time on rigs for the first few years.
