Ph.D. Education vs Ed.D.

I'm looking at a pretty specific focus from a choice of two schools. The first is the Ph.D. Education in Language, Literacy, and Technology at UC Irvine and the other is the Ed.D in Learning Technologies at Pepperdine.

My current background is in linguistics with my future goal being involved in language and technology. Most who hear this immediately think computational linguistics, but I'm more interested in the use of technology in teaching language. That's how I ended up with these two schools.

I see the pros and cons of both schools, but just wanted to gauge the thoughts of the other members here. A few of my friends told me that it's a no-brainer and that UCI is the clear choice.

But my greatest worries are the time commitment and workload of a Ph.D. program. I'm also not a very good writer and those research papers can get pretty hairy.

My GRE scores came back with 91/86/49 (verbal/math/essay) so I'm pretty confident that i'll be admitted to both schools.

Is there anything I should think about before deciding? Any advice anyone can throw my way?

Thanks!
