Phi Betta Kappa

My son just informed me that he was selected for the Phi Betta Kappa society at his university. Of course I'm proud of him, but I guess I'm not really sure how big of a deal this is or isn't. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Big deal. Very big deal (but it’s Beta, one T)

Thanks twoinanddone. Good to know! Obviously I was not a Phi Beta Kappa member!

Bettas make great pets; just make sure their bowl is warm because they get cold easily.

Phi Beta Kappa is a nice award to have, but doesn’t get any more reaction than the equivalent GPA (3.9-4.0). The one advantage is that it is acceptable to list Phi Beta Kappa on one’s resume’ for the rest of one’s career, while it is a bit odd and perhaps a little unouth to list a high GPA after a few years out of college.

That is a very big deal. Congrats!

Yes, big deal and highly recognizable when used on resume for job or grad school although it basically means you have extremely good grades with the correct percentage of liberal arts classes! Worth the cost.

My iPad autocorrected Phi Beta Kappa to the fish version Betta last year and I got teased as well. Don’t feel too bad. It is a big enough deal to make sure he fills out the paperwork and gets inducted. Like collegealum said, it gives a legitimate way to include your college GPA on a resume or application.

Thanks for all the info and the spelling corrections! Though it says I have only posted 20 times, I have been reading this forum for about 5 years now. What I learned on this Parent’s forum directly led to my son getting a full ride scholarship at a wonderful university and having a truly great college experience. Phi Beta Kappa is now the cherry on top! A sincere thanks to all of you for your help and guidance from a grateful mom!

Congrats! What U did your S attend?

Along with Latin honors, PBK is probably the most recognized academic honor in the country. Congratulations to your son, and to his parent(s)! Hey, I think you’re allowed to take a little credit for helping him get there!

HImom, my son is a junior at the University of Tulsa, a little gem of a school that we never would have discovered had it not been for the forums at College Confidential. He was a National Merit Finalist and was lucky enough to get their Presidential Scholarship. It’s a smaller school, around 3500 students. He’s been academically challenged and had many terrific opportunities–it has been a perfect fit for him!
