Philadelphia area colleges, choose two from these three

Lehigh Valley airport is only 25 minutes from Kutztown University by the way.

Drew, Fordham, Rowan might all be within an easy train ride to Philly.
What about Goucher? Safe area, good for her stats, easy transportation?

I don’t think she’d have a problem taking the train through the “bad” areas. Philly obviously can be dangerous, but in general people (low-income or wealthy) mind their own business.

I never took the local train or bus in NJ, but I learned Philly’s transit system quickly during college. I think it helps with developing independence. I came back at 19, and I was taking NYC’s subways with no problem.

Check out Rowan. Rowan is an easy ride from the Philadelphia Airport, about 30 minutes.

Stockton might be a little over an hour from the Philadelphia Airport, but it’s just twenty minutes from the Atlantic City Airport.

She would likely get merit at both and Stockton offers an out of state grant as well.

Both schools are growing in dynamic ways now–not just in terms of size–but both have a commitment to keeping small class sizes.

South Jersey is nice. It’s close to Philly and not far from NYC, but there is still a lot of farmland and open space and nice beaches.

Hmmm never knew there was a big enough airport there to service through to HUBS, that’s awesome. I’ll talk to my girl. I think she loved hte idea of grandma and aunts and uncles popping in or picking her up for stuff, and also being near Center City. But Kutztown is a really awesome U for GD, so I’ll have her think about it.

My mom lives 25 minutes from Stockton, thus I grew up around the corner from Stockton the second half of my childhood. (First half was in PA)…honestly 20 years ago Stockton was kind of thought of as a non name, not really anything special school. Kids that wanted to commute but wanted something better than community college would go there basically.

I was looking at the website and very impressed by the growth, and I know my daughter LOVES the jerseey shore so being within reach of that while the weather is nice (all of one month but whatever) might be nice.

I wonder if Stockton has any internships and such.

huh, Stockton is ranked 30th in regional Us in the north
West Chester is 68

So I guess since I grew up around Stockton we thought of it as uninteresting, but clearly it’s a good school.

Stockton has a ton of internships. A good friend of ours works there. It has a lot to offer at an affordable price. Brand new oceanfront housing is pretty nice too!

Probably not what your girl is looking at but if you’re willing to cross over into NJ, Stevens has a Visual Arts and Technology major that looks really cool. Its on the train line. It might be worth a look. If her scores are good, there could be nice merit available.

I love Stephens. My son applied there and got their Provost scholarship for 30k, but he chose to go to Penn State. My girl doesn’t want to be near NYC, she prefers Philadelphia. But Stephens is definitely a neat school with so much to offer.

Your D wants to hang out in Center City but can’t take public transportation through ethnically diverse or poor neighborhoods to get to the airport?

Not understanding the transportation quandry.

So it turns out you guys were right about Cabrini, though 90% of freshman live on campus, over half of those that do, leave every weekend. So basically, 60% of your dorm friends will be leaving and going home…

She did say the university is very consistent about providing stuff to do on the weekends in the rec center, and in the student center, but it seems like overall Arcadia is much higher ranked, more academic and not a commuter school, so we will replace Cabrini with Arcadia.

SO I think the current list is:
Penn State Main
West Chester
Arcadia
St JOe’s (if they offer her merit aid)

and we may or may not throw Drexel in and hope on a wing and a prayer that they would give her 25K to make it worth it (not likely!)…she would have to submit a portfolio but it’s open ended so not that much more work to apply.

You guys have been extremely helpful!!

I decided not to put Stockton on, because though the overall university is ranked higher, the Graphic Arts program is not as well funded and well known as WC. But if they don’t require a lot of essays, I’ll just add it to my dd’s common app list and have her apply there as well because why not.

Look into Rowan. 25mn to Philly.

Has University of Delaware been mentioned? Newark is an hour or so from Philly and SEPTA has a stop there.

It’s popular with our suburban Philly kids, and I understand the campus is beautiful and there’s a lot of school spirit.

wow University of Delaware is on the list. Probably just moved up into second place as per my daughter viewing their program and website

Be aware the Newark train service from SEPTA is weekday rush hours only, plus a few Amtrak trains a day. There is DART bus service from Newark to Wilmington that will fill in the gaps midday and weekends but it will add to the travel time.

Most college students don’t leave campus that often if they attend a residential campus.

I agree and don’t see transportation as an issue from UDel as Newark has everything a student would need. However, since transportation to Center City is mentioned in the first post as a requirement I figured I’d mention it. Trying to get back to UDel on a Sunday evening is difficult and time consuming via public transit.

Airport shuttle about $50 each way. Getting to city to meet relatives can be done via SEPTA, AMTRACK or bus. I suspect there are share rides and other options available around breaks like any good size university.
