I'm probably going to take PHI 101 Logic and PHI 102 Symbolic Logic, and I have three questions about them:

What textbooks are used in these classes? (If you don't remember it, is the textbook like the one in the following link? http://web.mit.edu/gleitz/www/Introduction%20to%20Logic%20-%20P.%20Suppes%20(1957)%20WW.pdf

Is PHI 101 mathematical rather than philosophical? Is it more like PHI 102 than other philosophy classes?

I’ve taken 102 and 111, but not 101. According to the online bookstore, this is the textbook used in PHI101: http://www.amazon.com/Critical-Thinking-Consider-Verdict-MyThinkingLab/dp/0205158668

In 102 I think this was the book we used: http://www.amazon.com/Logic-Techniques-Reasoning-Donald-Kalish/dp/0195155041

If you’re looking for something more mathematically based, take 102. They’re both classes in formal logic, but 101 will deal with language more whereas 102 is dealing with a precise form of logic based on a form of notation you’ll learn over the semester.

Also, these two classes don’t really “feel” like philosophy classes. The main philosophy courses (starting with Intro at 111) feel like humanities courses, so you’ll be doing more reading and writing in those courses. From my impression, 101 and 102 are more technical courses, in the same vein as a math or science course.

Thanks for your answer. Since I’m quite mathematical person, I prefer mathematical classes than philosophical classes. As a future math major student, I need to be familiar with such technical stuffs, so I will enjoy these classes or at least PHI 102. Textbooks are really nice indicator of how the class will go on, and I really appreciate to see the book used in PHI 101, which is my main concern.

This is out of my curiosity, but how can I access to the online bookstore of Grinnell? I understand that I will know the link from school sooner or later, but I’m really interested in the books used in other classes. Could you PM or put the link here? Or is it unavailable for those who haven’t got special school ID or .edu email address?

Sorry for the late reply, but the URL is just bookstore.grinnell.edu

Oh, never mind! Thanks for your help :D
