Anyone have any info about the possiblilities for phil. major. Would it be considered one of the smaller depts, least utilized? Visited recently and like it, heard about lots of interested proffs, but also like Cornell.

Philosophy at Princeton is popular, especially for pre-Laws. You might not be surrounded by people who are interested in philosophy for its own sake (although I am sure you will find a good number), but the departments are quite well utilized.

I have one thing to say: Peter Singer.

Actually, I do have more. I was accepted ED and I'm considering being a philo major (with the intention of perhaps becoming a professional philosopher down the road). If you've visited, you probably know that Princeton is absolute tops in philosophy (with the exception of maybe Pittsburgh and some other places), so I consider it a great opportunity. The department is also relatively large compared to other universities, and in general, philosophy is a great preparation for many careers.

On the other hand, the dept. is overwhelmingly analytic in style. The emphasis for contemporary philosophy will be on Russell, Wittgenstein, Carnap, Frege, et al., not Derrida, Foucault, Sartre, Heidegger, et al. Then again, it's tough to find any good Continential philosophers in the US - you pretty much have to go to, well, the continent.

This is a fun place to go (although it's technically for grad programs):

Most pre-laws I know are actually not considering philosophy as a major. I'd definitely go so far as to say that politics and WWS are the more popular choices for pre-law people. I'm pre-law, though, and I'll probably be concentrating in philosophy. The department is sort of middle-ground: not nearly as big as say the econ, politics, English, etc. departments; but also not small enough to be included in Major Choices. Still, it's recognized as one of the best departments to concentrate in simply because of the professors.

Singer is rediculous.

If I get into Pton, im gonna figure out some way to sit down with him at some point, I gotta figure out what makes him tick.
