Philosophy Major

I got into UC Riverside with a philosophy major but I don’t know toooo much about their program. I was wondering if anyone had any information about this major at UCR?

Hi @hopeful7770, I studied philosophy at UCR for my first two undergrad years, but transferred over to UCLA’s philosophy department. The philosophy department at UCR is not bad at all. I took Intro to Logic, Critical Thinking, & Intro to Philosophy all with great and extremely knowledgeable professors who genuinely cared about their students. The TA’s in the major were also some of the best TA’s I’ve had in all my GE’s courses. I would often visit them in office hours to get additional help on the material or just to chat about the major and they were always very helpful and welcoming. Without those TA’s, I can’t say with confidence that I would’ve passed those classes with flying colors. Keep in mind that the phil department at UCR specializes in continental philosophy, so it naturally attracts graduate students who are writing dissertations and conducting research closely along that branch. So, if continental philosophy is what interests you most about the phil major and what you’d like to focus on, then UCR is a great institution to study that. However, if you’re looking for some rigorous law school prep, I would say that maybe an institution with a department more specialized in analytic philosophy (like UCLA for example) would be better, but if your aim is to go to grad school for more philosophy, I think UCR’s department would be adequate enough. Good luck and congratulations!!
