As an agnostic, I think that my position is better summed up as:

I don’t care.

And until a theist or an atheist can come up with some proof–I will continue to not care.

As an agnostic, I think that my position is better summed up as:

I don’t care.

that’s good, fem. let other people do your thinking for you.

it may make you feel better to compare religion to a 5 year old belief, but it doesn’t make any valid argument against it.

Honestly, pinker, I’ve thought a lot about the subject. And I find that I just don’t give a damn anymore. I’ve been around a lot of religious folks and I’ve been around a lot of atheists (I much prefer the atheists), but ultimately I have found that believing or not believing in the existence of god doesn’t change anything in my life. So why should I care?

i think it’s perfectly analagous.

ultimately, 4 out of 5 religious people i’ve spoken with – and believe me, friday and saturday nights in Isla Vista, with jesus burger right along my path… there were many of those conversations… 4 out of 5 of these conversations ended with the other person admitting that the sole reason they believe in God (in my experience, mainly jesus christ), was this: “I just know.”

if you’ve ever tried to reason with a 5 year old, you’d find merit in the analogy.

@pinkerfloyd you clearly don’t seem mature enough for this conversation but I will tell you that you can be saved too because that is what I personally believe. Your sarcasm and critical approach to faith is complemented best by your elementary “monster in the closet” scenario. As if that remotely encompasses the complexity of this discussion. I do hope you look more deeply into this subject and merely use your “their all weak and crazy people” approach because you feel so convinced that beliefs like mine are illogical. I have no hard feelings for people who treat my beliefs the way you do and do not attempt to belittle their beliefs.

but stupid people in religion does not mean the religion is wrong. that’s like typical straw man, in a sense.

anyways, i’m not at all saying that that proves religion is right, i’m merely saying there is really no point to compare it to your 5 year old self other than making yourself feel better by belittling religion.

haha wow, we both said belittle. must not be a singular thought.

@ fem…

practically, it’s probably best not to care. then again, most of the time, when i encounter a question that can’t easily be answered, i give it a fair amount of inspection before succumbing to pragmatic disregard.

everyone has their boiling point, though… so i guess i understand.
i just hate seeing people rely entirely on others for thought.
from what you said, you’d be willing to make a decision between (let’s say) 4 potentially true possibilities when, given your own inspection and consideration, you might find that there in fact exist 8 potentially true possibilities from which to choose.

Pinkerfloyd have you ever considered that these people just maybe have experienced somthing you have not? I know I have. And I can speak for only myself but it is not a “i dont want to think to hard about it i just know”. Its that I can not explain my experiences with God to you and expect you to believe because that would be crazy. Why should you believe me? But that does not make it less valid. It just means I respect your skepticism. True faith is a personal experience and relationship.

No, I wouldn’t make a decision between 4 potentially true possibilities because none of them were proven.

I would make a decision if Jesus came down to Earth and ***** slapped me with a bible.

He, he, he.

GUYS!

i’m not belittling religion… at least not with that analogy.

i’m belittling the idea that it’s acceptable to believe in something because, and i quote, “I JUST KNOW!”

i’m sick of you crazies ignoring legitimate objections on the grounds that they’re ‘offensive’.

@ Bolts…

your last post… that’s just it, man. no matter what i say, i can’t argue with what you’ve PERSONALLY experienced. there’s NOTHING i can say to make you doubt what you’ve experienced. i can call it foolish by analogy, and i will, because that’s what i think… but at least i have a reason for thinking the way i do, which is more than you can say for yourself; at least in that regard.

The burden of proof lies on believers.

I’d decide to party in hell with the rest of the homo’s so we can have a homo-rrific time.
Woohoo!

this is too funny…

look at the ad at the top of the page…

http://i617.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/albums/tt257/pinkerfloyd/Picture1.png

i know pinker, i mentioned i saw that ad too in this thread. pretty funny.

@ pinkerfloyd You see I think thats just were your wrong man. What I have experienced is true and real to me. It is immpossible for me to say there is not a God because it would be like me saying I dont have hands. If you experienced somthing and no one else did it would not matter what anyone else said you would KNOW it happend right?Thats why I was trying to explain that it is not a belief where i say I know because I cannot prove it. It is a belief i say i know because I have experienced it and if you had too (which I believe you can though I know youll think I’m lame for saying so) you would understand that there is no greater proof than to know first hand.

haha by the way that ad is pretty funny. Even the large majority of scholars believe that Jesus of Nazareth did exist and had a following. Whether or not he was the son of God is a whole other subject of course.

CCbolts,

you seem to not understand, “I personally experienced it” is the apex of a worthless argument

What is the evidence that Jesus existed? (Just curious…)
