Hi I was wondering why Vassar asks for a photo
Do most people submit one
Like is it the norm
And if I do put one are they gonna judge me by it like do I have to look preppy like a school picture or is whatever fine
My son got into Vassar and he submitted a photo. Personally if I were reading an application I would like to be able to apply a face to it. Antway if there was anything that that may sublimely affect the admission counselor for Vassar it probably would not be preppy it would be something more like artsy. By the way did you know preppy was originally a feminist statement. It came from the seven sisters, maybe Vassar I forget, as a rebellion against having these highly educated woman wearing the required, incredibly restrictive, and cumbersome dresses of the day that all woman and college woman by rules were required to wear. It was a way to look tasteful but actually able to function.
Not exactly
Originally, preppy referred to the college preparatory, aka prep schools, in the Northeast. It also referred to the students and alums of prep schools who exhibited certain characteristics of their elite upbringing.
I assume you’re referring to this article?

Yes but I think somewhere I saw an archived NY times or other article dated from the 20’s on the subject but I am definitely lacking supporting documentation, just something I remember. I supposed the daily beast is pulling on some reference. From what I remember reading it seemed the look and definitive style we call preppy originated as a conscience style created in the seven sisters and disseminating out from there going from college to preparatory schools and not vice versa. Of course it wasn’t called preppy until later.
I have not done real research on the subject so anything I might have said or say should be prefixed with something like “I remember reading some where” or “I think I remember reading somewhere” and “I could be mistaken”
. It would make sense to me since woman tend (shaky stereotyping ground here) to be more style conscious then men and the original ivy league look would be something more akin to what Emerson would wear as in a suit. I just remember because i thought it was so interesting to think that the style we associate with moneyed men started with rebellious woman. Yes I really sounded preachy in the original post . Of course the ivy league itself goes back to a NY papers post about college sports, I am pretty sure I read that somewhere.
I submitted a photo, but it was this professional one I had taken of me playing the violin since that is a big part of my life, was what I wrote my essay about, and I felt it was better than just submitting the typical senior photo. I’m sure either is fine, though. I’m not sure how much it weighs on your chance of getting accepted, but like what @robotrainbow said, I would want to see a face to the name when reviewing an application. Good luck!!!
