In 2002, the Old Man of the Mountain, iconic symbol of the state of New Hampshire, was destroyed when the granite ledges that made up the profile fell off of the mountainside. All state seals, highway signs, etc., use the silhouette for branding. The viewing site has lots of infrastructure. In order to keep tourists visiting Franconia Notch State Park stopping in, there is a plaza that tells the story of how the face was formed, maintained for over 100 yrs, and ultimately lost out to the forces of erosion.

ANYWAY, there is an art installation there that allows own to stand at certain spots (based on your height) and look up with one eye closed, and see what the Old Man looked like. Here’s what you see:

For those unfamiliar with this story, here are before 2002 and after 2002 pictures:

@DrGoogle123 - I love Emerald Bay. My grandparents lived in Stateline when I was growing up and we spent many great summers at Lake Tahoe. Also many winters skiing there.

What a treat! I finally had the brain power to quietly go through the thread from when I was derailed (bed-bound due to piriformis syndrome & a hip joint issue)

Amazing train ride description & pics! New foal is darling! Southwest! (Have any of you driven the old Turquoise Trail? My friends and I did a few years ago (side trip while we were enjoying the balloon fiesta) - it drives along a rugged and rocky dirt trail between two mountain ranges - took us 2 hours to drive I think it was 17 miles. Gorgeous all the way.) Sunsets! Cats & bunnies! Hummingbirds! Thunderbirds!

A wonderful hour for me - to all who share your adventures and pics…thank you!

We decided to take a day off from our seemingly never-ending cabin projects to wander around Kennebunkport and have lunch on the river last week. We started with oysters, lobster fried rice, and champagne, just because:

It was a beautiful day for strolling and shopping, but I’m still thinking about that lunch.

I love Kennebunk Port. Talk about lobsters.
Here is a picture of VinalHaven, the summer before COVID, when prices were reasonably, we enjoyed the ferry ride from Rockland

7 years ago today (thanks FB memories) I went to the Ramakrishna Monastery in Silverado Canyon (So Cal) - I went on a meditative hike and did a meditation session at the temple and took this photo - it wasn’t until I got home and added it to FB that I saw the rays of the sun. I love this place. It’s been closed to the public since Covid days. I used to go often for contemplation.

When I posted that picture yesterday I remembered that it didn’t show any ferns. Our wild ferns are so spectacular this year. They are just starting to get a tiny bit brown and you know it’s beginning to turn to fall at the end of August when the ferns begin to die.

Same trail as yesterday. Just a different spot

My daughter had her wisdom teeth out today and immediately after requested a trip out for some fresh air and sunshine, so we went to the bio park again. We caught a baby orangutan and rainbow clouds and beautiful plant life.
