I heard that thermodynamics aspect of physical chemistry is important, but do you have to know about quantum mechanics as well? If a school offers, say, physical chemistry I and physical chemistry II, do chemical engineering programs generally require students to take both?

In my case, yes. We take as much physical chemistry as the chemistry majors. In addition to thermodynamics, we need quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics.

Equilibrium Thermo can substitute for Physical Chem I, but Physical Chem II is also required.

Thanks for the replies.
