I recently got accepted to UNC and was wondering if there are any alumni here of UNC that maybe know of the physics department or majored in physics at UNC. How good is the physics department at UNC? More specifically, I want to eventually go into Materials or Electrical Engineering with an undergrad in physics. Would UNC be a good preparation for this career choice? Thanks for your time.

As a disclaimer, I am not in any way affiliated with UNC-Chapel Hill. However, its physics department is not as stong as the chemistry department, which is excellent. I'd put it in the top 50, but it's definitely not one of the top physics programs. Since you plan to go on to graduate school, the strength of the major is not as important as some make it out to be. As a general rule, UNC-Chapel Hill has rigorous academics, so you should do quite well. The Applied Science program provides interdisciplinary offerings to supplement the science majors. UNC-Chapel Hill allows cross-registration with Duke and N.C. State, both of which have excellent engineering facilities.
