Piano Audition Pieces

For the music supplement for Stanford, I have these two current pieces in mind:

Liszt-Transcendental

My son auditioned last year (RD) so I can give you some information I know. I think those two pieces are fine as they are from the different eras (Romantic and modern). Also, 6-7 minutes’ music is not long at all. You could replace one with something slow but as long as you can play them well, I don’t think it matters.

For live audition, you are assigned to play for one of the professors in his studio. You can start with either piece you want and when he stops and you move on to the next piece. Sometime he might do casual interview but the whole audition lasts 10 minutes.

Good luck with your audition. If you are applying REA, it comes very quickly.

For privacy issues…and the competitive nature of music auditions “live” or “recorded”…I would strongly recommend not posting any “specific” works on CC or anywhere else…after all, you don’t want anyone else to be performing the same pieces as you…or someone picking more exciting/difficult repertoire to perform than you because of the information you posted…ideally, you and your private music teacher/maestro should be going through the list of works that would best demonstrate and complement your strengths in contrasting styles in the time allotted…please stick to the time limitations…

…you and your teacher can best determine which particular passage in each work YOU would like to emphasize…no one else can better understand YOU and your own strengths and weaknesses than your teacher/parent/yourself…

…showcase and highlight your best in the pieces/works you are most comfortable with…

…like the personal essays…the musical works you pick to perform are personal/meaningful to you and to no one else…and let’s keep it that way! Hope this helps. Good luck.
