Piano Auditions

We are about to leave for our auditions marathon (5 in 3 weeks). This is a first for him. All of the schools he is auditioning for require either 4 or 5 pieces. He has 2 four movement sonatas, a three movement sonata, a prelude and fugue and an etude. This amounts to week over an hour of music. We know they will only listen to about 15 minutes and that he will usually get to pick the 1st piece.

The question is, as a rule how much of each piece is heard. Do they usually listen to the beginning of each movement, the beginning of some movements or do they sometimes ask to start at the middle or end of a movement? His favorite part of his program is the 4th movement of one of the sonatas. Is there a way to indicate that he would like to play that?

We would be grateful for any info or experiences on how auditions actually work.

Thanks

It is better to have your son’s teacher involved. I don’t think anyone can ask him play from the middle of a movement, and normally he get to choose his first piece. They can cut him off at any place during the play.
