My youngest is interested in piano, though too early to tell if he will major in it or minor. What are the conservatories and universities that are known for piano performance? I assume the usual suspects like Curtis, Julliard, Eastman etc… are strong, but are there certain schools known for piano in particular?
I was just checking in here…and noticed this. I’m not well versed about current piano programs in college.
BUT when my kid went to Eastern Music Festival (summer program in Greensboro) back in 2004 and 2005, they had a fabulous summer piano program.
I know my kiddo got a lot of information about colleges and potential instrument teachers at his summer festivals (not piano).
I think Mannes has a strong reputation fro piano.
Bard Conservatory is very strong in piano. Peter Serkin is one of the professors. Jeremy Denk and Richard Goode are no longer full faculty members, but they teach master classes. If your son prefers not to get a BM in Music Performance, the piano faculty in Bard College itself are top notch, as well.
I’ve heard about Mannes, as well. Although I know more about it at the graduate level.
You’ve got plenty of time to plan - I would guess there will be a wide range of possibilities for piano performance!
Indiana University just hired Norman Krieger who is wonderful!!! Wonderful pianist and wonderful human! So, I would definitely look into his studio.
Look at CIM- their piano department is first rate and has produced major competition prize winners. Sergei Babayan, Kathryn Brown and Antonio Pompa-Baldi are well known.
