Picking an Engineering Field

Hi all, first year engineering student declaring a major at the end of the spring here. I’m just wondering if any of you have advice as to how to go about picking my engineering discipline. Maybe you have some story as to what really inspired you. As of now, I’m mostly interested in structural engineering and (probably even more so) aerospace. Aside from my interests, I’ve seen that aerospace is a much more difficult job market, whereas structural have an abundance of jobs and growth. Additionally, I’ve also seen the average pay to be higher for aerospace. (Not trying to pick what I want based solely off money, but I want to ensure I can get a good job). I have several good connections in the civil engineering field in general (family friends, close friends, etc), and I’d like to (hopefully) get an internship over the summer to begin getting experience. As for aerospace, no really good leads there. Also, does anyone have any insight as to how much one could work his way up in each field?

Sidenote: I’ve also read online that a Master’s in Structural Engineering basically allows you to work in any industry, including aerospace. If so, this seems like a good way to keep my options open. Does anyone know how viable this route is?

Thanks all

I’d suggest a visit to your campus career center. They will be able to show some example workplaces for grads in those fields. They might even be able to arrange a job shadow day. (I did that at GE, but I think it was coordinated by SWE).
