Picking the Right Undergrad College

Merry Christmas guys!

I'm not sure if I am posting this on the right forum but I didnt want to post on specific college forums because opinion on those forums would be more biased than it would be here. Right now I have been looking at my options for college and how the college I choose to attend for my undergrad affects acceptance into med school. Basically, I am looking at Baylor and RICE. Look, I dont think anyone would dispute the fact that RICE is superior to Baylor in nearly everyway. However, I doubt I will get any financial aid at Rice while I can get a full ride to Baylor. Thus, should I pick Baylor for my undergrad because money is somewhat of an issue for my family. Additionally, will going to Baylor give me any leverage if I apply to Baylor Med.

Thanks for your time,
Robbie

Baylor Med is actually no longer affiliated with Baylor undergrad.

unless your family makes a WHOLE lot of money, you will probably get substantial FA from Rice. You should still apply to both just to see. As to which is better in terms of preparing you for med school. I personally think that Rice is because I know more about them. You will have plenty of opportunities by being near the Texas Medical Center, the largest research center in the world. It holds 11 different hospital systems, 2 dental schools, 2 medical schools (Baylor Med is one) and 4 nursing schools. Also, Rice is one of the worlds leading research institutes so there are possibilities there if that is your thing.

There still exists a Baylor/Baylor Med BS/MD program. If you are competitive for a "full-ride" at Baylor , you may be competitive to apply to the program. Now, why you are so sure you can get a full-ride to Baylor UG is a bit of a mystery to me.....but that is OT.

I believe you are thinking of the Rice/Baylor BS/MD program. Also, the deadline for that has passed. It was Dec 1.

I will give you the same advice that an admission's officer at OHSU gave my son when trying to decide on his undergrad school: go to the school that is the best fit for you, and make sure you have a great 4 year experience because med. school will not be the fun experience that college is. End result: Tulane ----> Wash U Stl Med

Hey, sorry I probably should of explained how I came to the conclusion that I'd get a full ride to baylor. I just put my stats into their finincial calculator and it spat out an number that was, I believe, the cost of attending baylor.

If that did not include any merit and was all FA, I am sure that Rice will be able to more than match them.

(I am assuming that the OP was speaking of merit aid only. Otherwise the original post doesn't make any sense to me. Rice is more generous than Baylor on non-merit FA. Baylor has a more expansive merit aid program. )

OP, I'd do the numbers again. Will you be NMF? If so, the max out on the scholarship calculator is $29+ with tuition and required fees, R + B coming in at over $37K. If not NMF then you max out on the calculator at $14,500. Both calculations were done with straight 36's and 800's and being #1 in a class of 1000. Now, I do know kids from our local high school who got a lot more than that calculator would suggest.

Baylor University also has a BS/MD program with Baylor College of Medicine. It's entirely different from the Rice/Baylor program and is limited to four (if i'm remembering correctly) students. I'm not sure if the deadline has passed.

No, pyles. I was thinking of the Baylor/Baylor BS/MD. I know a kid in the program now. He enjoyed it greatly.

i just got into Rice,,,,,when it comes to financial aid and generosity....trust me....u cannot beat them.....huge endowements......thats my personal experience...
