If you jumped on filing for the TWIC and receive a notice that it is ready for pick-up, know that you need to bring ID documentation with you when picking up. But, since we had to send the passport, birth certificate and SS card to USMMA, we no longer have those documents, which we used in the application process, to show TWIC. TWIC is allowing you to bring other documentation ( 2 pieces, one with picture like a drivers' license), but it might take you some time to get these other documents. For example, they will take, along with the drivers' license, a "certified" copy of a birth certificate with a raised seal, but that might require a trip to your city hall to obtain. Another acceptable piece of documentation would be a voters' registration card. Check with the TWIC website for acceptable documentation to save yourself a headache when you get to the TWIC center. We are going today to pick up card. If we have other problems we will post here.

Got mine with just a drivers license.

It's good to get this out of the way and I'm jealous of your foresight but you really don't need to get your TWIC card before arriving. The school pays for it and sets up appointments and everything during the spring trimester. At least you'll be able to go into ports unescorted before most people (good thing if you plan on being a deckie - logistics presentations later on in the year).

Can't claim foresight, it was required in the Indoc instructions. But we were also able to pick-up card using a picture drivers' license only, although the TWIC website required 2 pieces of ID if you didn't have ID from the "A" list, such as a passport. We brought an expired passport in addition to the drivers' license, but didn't need it.

save your receipt, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the fee for the TWIC is tax refundable.

Yogert, the new candidates for the class of 2012 ARE required to have the TWIC card before indoc.

suzannegra,

Did you receive this document in your giant packet of paperwork?

TSA: DHS Realigns TWIC Compliance Date

Is it your understanding that the incoming class of 2012 still needs the TWIC at INDOC?

if you dont have your twic by indoc, dont worry about it. KP will accommodate people and assist you getting it by the time you go out to sea

That seems a little silly.. They will not need to have unescorted access to secure port areas or vessels until, at the earliest, next summer. Its also a waste of $132.50 if the kid doesnt make it to sea year.
By the way, the TWIC alone will not allow you access to a vessel. For that you will need to be on the crew/visitors/joining crew list. Normally that list is sent by the ship several days in advance of arrival via email attachment to terminal security.

I agree deepdraft, but we were told that the new candidates have to have them, or at least have the process started before indoc.

I believe the candidates are being encouraged to have the cards prior to indoc unless they live 200 miles away from the nearest enrollment center. The encouragement has something to do with an expectation of a huge backlog the enrollment center are expecting in the fall from a nationwide deadline.
